So, the other day I went and picked up a couple old motors. One was a 1958 Johnson JW-14, which I have already posted a thread earlier on this one.
The other, of course is a 1957 Evinrude 18hp. The guy I got it from aparantly had it sitting outside because it had a lot of water in it. I pulled the spark plugs and I found a little rust and water on both.
The motor was stuck when I brought it home too. Well, low and behold, I sprayed hell out of the cylinders and quickly got it freed up. I layed it on it's back and dumped about a cup of gas into the carb and flushed the crank case out really good. I took a compression test and got 100 psi dead nuts, on both cylinders.
I thought "way cool"
So I pulled the flywheel and filed the points and there are two new coils under there. "WAY COOL"
again. Once I filed the points, I put it all back together and got it to run. LMAO!! Oddly enough, the spindle is busted, which I never saw happen before and the lower unit leaks water. Needless to say, this will be a restoration project, but at least I did find out that I have a good strong powerhead with a new ignition system installed.
I pulled both bypass covers and the pistons looked pretty good. I just found the tiniest bit of scoring on the bottom, but it won't effect the compression any. It doesn't look like I'll have to go into this motor a whole lot, but I'll wait till my place sells and get to where I'm going, before I pull 'er down. I blew all the water out of the LU and filled it up with oil, so nothing will rust out.
