So, the other day I went and picked up a couple old motors. One was a 1958 Johnson JW-14, which I have already posted a thread earlier on this one.

The other, of course is a 1957 Evinrude 18hp. The guy I got it from aparantly had it sitting outside because it had a lot of water in it. I pulled the spark plugs and I found a little rust and water on both.
The motor was stuck when I brought it home too. Well, low and behold, I sprayed hell out of the cylinders and quickly got it freed up. I layed it on it's back and dumped about a cup of gas into the carb and flushed the crank case out really good. I took a compression test and got 100 psi dead nuts, on both cylinders.:D I thought "way cool" So I pulled the flywheel and filed the points and there are two new coils under there. "WAY COOL" again. Once I filed the points, I put it all back together and got it to run. LMAO!! Oddly enough, the spindle is busted, which I never saw happen before and the lower unit leaks water. Needless to say, this will be a restoration project, but at least I did find out that I have a good strong powerhead with a new ignition system installed. I pulled both bypass covers and the pistons looked pretty good. I just found the tiniest bit of scoring on the bottom, but it won't effect the compression any. It doesn't look like I'll have to go into this motor a whole lot, but I'll wait till my place sells and get to where I'm going, before I pull 'er down. I blew all the water out of the LU and filled it up with oil, so nothing will rust out.

Sounds like you have nice starting point with that one! Seems like the 18hp are bullet proof no matter how abused they were. Good luck with it and post some pics when you get her finished.

I agree, I think this is one of the best motors ever. It runs well on one cylinder, is easy to manage, and seems pretty bullet proof.

I have 2. One came as a parts motor but I am thinking it will be brought back into service this spring, just because I can.

I have many 18's and love the engine. Sounds like a good scoop. But what do you mean a broken spindle?

The turning spindle, just under the front of the lower shroud.

Wow, that is a weird peice to break. How did you manage that one? :)

Do mean the whole steering tube behind the transom clamps?

Yep, that's it. That's the way I got it. I figure someone hit something while the boat was in tow. It looks like it had use afterwards too, because there is some wear where the break is. The break is no longer clean an jagged looking. but rather dirty and had been vibrating together for some time.:D:D:D

Interesting. That ought to be an easy and cheap part to buy, as not many people need them after parting out the lower unit and the powerhead.

Yea, I think you're right. I may need a lower unit too, because there is a flat spot, where it may have ground off on the road.:D:D:D

Some people, should not be allowed to breed, let alone operate boat motors.

So, I finally got some pics of this old beast today. It's not too bad looking of a machine, but it could have done without the metalic green color. LMAO

In the third pic, you'll see the broken part I was refering too.

All of those motor designs are of just classic styling and engineering. It says to me- Quality, reliabilty and durabilty. It`s sad we`ve lost much of that today.

Yep, especially when motors like this one still run, after sitting outside for years.:D:D

The broken part is called the steering bracket pilot tube. Should be easy to find. They don't break very often. Its a bit of a pain to replace. I have the parts manual for your motor. Drop me a PM with your email if you need it.

Thanks Wayne for the parts manuals on my two motors. I just picked up a decent looking twin line tank for the old 18 today for a whopping 10 bucks. Not bad huh?:D It looks like, it's good to be put to use. No internal rust and the hoses look okay. I may get new hoses and o-rings, just to make sure though.

$10 is a screaming deal. The going rate is usually around $75. Where'd you get it? (not that I need any, I'm just curious)

I posted a want ad on Craigslist and a fella local to me answered. I guess he used to have a Big Twin 30 and an old 18. Somehow, the tank stayed behind.

Well, I went ahead and put new plugs in this old jewel and started it up. Oddly enough, the clamp screws and carb needles were all stuck. Once I soaked everything down with WD-40 and got it all free, I charged it up with new fuel and got it running. It actually runs really good considering it looks like something that was pulled from the grave. Anyone saw this old motor, they would say: "NO WAY!!":D
Oddly enough, this old 18 was easier to bring back to life than the JW was. LOL but then again, it is OMC's finest motor made. I've brought some pretty ugly looking Big Twins back to life too.:D
