I purchased a 1976 Starcraft runabout this summer. I used it most of the summer, but now I need to do some repairs to the transome and floor. I have pulled the transome out and am in the process of cutting out the new one out of maple. Is this wood ok to use and what kind of sealer do I need to use to coat it with? Also I need the left stern transome corner cap, it was missing when I bought the boat and the previous owner used duct tape instead. If anyone can tell me where I might find one I would appreciate it. I looked on Ebay and other web sights but cannot find one. Terry

I'd use a plywood, they are less likely to crack all the way through. Seal with epoxy and fiberglass. The cap is going to be hard to find, you might try calling a starcraft dealer and hoping for luck or continue browsing online.

SAP, I think I have the left side for a Holiday model. What model is your boat?

I think my boat is a super Sport. I googled it and that is the only model listed that was aluminum.

Re: 1976 Starcraft Runabout restoration

Thank you Erikpn for the advise on the transome. I am hoping for good weather this weekend to work on it. How many coats of epoxy should I use. Also there were two other pieces of wood that I had to remove. One was on the outside of the boat (1/2 inch plywood) The other was on the inside of the transome (1 inch thick) I am using treated wood for both of these. I am assuming that these should be coated also. I will predrill the holes. Should I coat the inside of the holes with epoxy also? Thank you for your help.

Take some time to read some of the Starcraft resto threads. DO NOT use treated lumber anywhere near an aluminum boat. The new PT eats aluminum. Your transom is 2 pieces of 3/4" plywood sandwiched together. I used regular exterior ply on mine. I glued them together with, and am sealing them with epoxy resin. Pre-drill and over drill your holes so as to coat them with resin as well. 2 coats should be fine. If your boat is an open bow it's a SuperSport. Mine is also a '76.

Yes mine is open also. Thank you for the info on the wood. I will take back the treated and use the plywood you recommended. I will get the epoxy resin also so I will have it ready to put the first coat on Sat. weather permitting.

No gender discrimination here! Of course you can be in the club.

Best way to handle photos is to set up a free account at photobucket.com, size the pics to 640x480 (you can do that with a single click on photobucket) and then link to your pics from here. You can put the pics in-line in your posts if you use the

Welcome to the previously all male SC club. :) Great addition.

Looking forward to seeing your pics and the progress.

You might consider adding to your profile where you are, even generally.

glad you decided against the maple for the transom! it would have been alot heavier, plus prone to cracking during the drying process.

i know someone had mentioned using fiberglass on it, but you dont have to do that. just coat the whole thing with epoxy resin and you will be good. the origional transoms werent coated with anything, and mine had lasted 39 years...

are you doing the deck too?

Re: 1976 Starcraft Runabout restoration

Thank you guys for making me feel welcome. In answer to your questions, I am going to redo the floor also. I was just going to try to get the transome done first. I have already pulled my seats and carpet out. The guy that owned the boat before me used 1x6 board for the floor and not a solid sheet of plywood. you can imagine that the bolts for the seat bases worked the boards loose. Not good when you catch a big fish. I am going back and reading the posts that you guys have put up. I am impressed with what you have done with your boats. I am looking forward to really getting into the repair part now, I just hope that the weather will cooperate with me. I am working outside, one night it was raining and I just keep the cover on the boat and got up under it with a light and got screws out of the floor. I got it bad. I will fill out my profile as suggested and also will set up and acct. with photobucket. Hopefully soon I will have pics. Thanks again

doing both the deck and transom is a piece of cake in these boats. i was a total newbie, and with the help of everyone here i had a pretty decent outcome with about a weeks worth of work. most of us have pretty in depth explinations of how we did our decks and transoms.
