Exhaust Cover Seal Ring? The Big One

I discovered that I need a new seal ring for the exhaust cover. Part #305672. Item #39 in the image. I also discovered that they are worth their weight in gold!

Before I bite the bullet on a new one, has anyone had any luck making one from some sort of material from a parts house? It appears to be made from some sort of soft rubber.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

-Will

I don't know when they stopped making those. My concern would be the one you buy would be old, and dried out. If so, it will break when you try to put it on. If you make one, it will have to tolerate gas, and oil that will leak down to it.

I'd give serious consideration to experimenting with a piece of fuel hose or something similar...

It is a molded part made of foam rubber similar to car weatherstripping.

hmmm...I'm reading thru McMaster Carr website on foam. Lots to choose from. Any idea of what kind of foam seal it is? I need some about 2 inches thick.

I don't have a clue what kind of foam OMC made them out of. But my guess would be Buna-N (nitrile) for gas/oil resistance.

It looks like a gasket from a toilet bowl wax ring.

One on flea bay, $79 fricken dollars  1/2 the price of a used motor!

...any thoughts fellas?

Well, I've replaced the factory part, but have never tried anything else. I suppose the stuff you are looking at will do the job if you can get it stuffed in there. Its only purpose is to keep smoke from being sucked up through and smothering the motor. That is the reason you are working on it, right?

The seal was some type of molded rubber, not foam. Most foam's will not tolerate gasoline, and besides it would make a very poor guard again'st fume's, or gasses. I would look for a molded rubber weather strip, and the sealer or glue to go with it. The rubber guard's used on air conditioner line's may be a source.
