I thought the cobras after 94 were Volvo drives or a volvo would work on them or something along those lines?

Show her your open hand and say "Don't make me ball this up"

I'd buy the engine and drive and hang onto to it but you can always change your mind and sell for a profit later. It's like money in the bank...

there is nothing wrong with the one that is in the vip I am just thinking about the future dont want to have to spend an ungodly amount of money if something happens to the engine or outdrive that is in the vip

The only thing wrong with it is you can't buy parts everywhere.
But if its running good you can sell it and buy something thats a lot simpler to maintain.

I buy like you do, stuff that needs fixing or good but used.
But I steer away from the obscure and obsolete.
An old Mercedes is a collectible, old OMC is getriddable.:p

This is true. Can you clarify what you really have. 1998 4.6 omc??? What year is the donor boat?

Seeing as its too late, "May the Force be with You" :D
not to Hijack but I have one question, Why in the world are we all afraid of our Wives WOW, we all do our best not to rock the boat. Who made them the captain anyway? Just thought I'd ask lol

I ain't, I wear the pants.
When I was in Russia a gal told me "we don't have that feminism disease in our women". They're also tough as nails, "an iron fist in a velvet glove" is the saying. And they expect their men to be men.
I also heard the same things from French women.

Men make their women the boss when they abrogate their responsibility.
And women don't really want that...regardless of the squawking.
A father who takes his daughters fishing is bringing them up right, they won't be angry at men when they come of age.

I would make sure the boat you are looking at has the same drive package as your boat. I had a 1996 Wellcraft with the cobra SX drive and Volvo motor, I don't think OMC was making the drive in 1998, but rather Volvo. If it is a Cobra SX drive, that is basically a Volvo setup and parts are readily available for that set up. If that is the case, you are wasting your money buying the other boat, unless you want to part it out for some money, or your boat has failing parts. If on the other hand your boat is in good shape and has been well cared for, you probably won't have to touch any of the expensive parts for a long time. Especially if you are in fresh water.

Well the original...pure OMC Cobras were built from 86-93. 94 and up is the joint venture with Volvo model which is the same as the SX...
Now either way I'd consider buying it...because...if it's the pure OMC model (86-93) you've got a ready to bolt on drive...if it's the 94 and up model....there is a kit (volvo) that enables you to install the Volvo style drive on your original OMC transom mount...giving you a converted OMC to Volvo boat....at a real bargain price...

Now how to make it happen...I'd probably put it this way...you are not buying a boat...you came across a great deal on PARTS...that cost THOUSANDS....THAT YOU WILL EVENTUALLY NEED...
I'd find a way to part this out not on your property but somewhere else...and just arrive home with the parts in the back of a pick up truck or something...and say look honey this will let me keep this boat running forever...no more boat payment....

I used this logic to buy an extra set of the now unavailable unless you're lucky one piece Cobra V6 manifolds...I put a new set on em when I got this boat 8 years ago...then I saw the price going up and bought another set...the only place I know of where you can get them is selling them for 1200 a side! and I paid less than 1/3rd that....no argument from the wife....she trusts my judegment in things mechanical....

Re: No Brainer just need input for argument with the wife.

Okay guys help me our here. This might be my brain fart. The original poster has
I recently purached a 1998 vip valliant 185 i/o with a 4.6l v6 and cobra out drive.
which should be a 4.3, but also should be compatible with a volvo drive. Why is he so concerned about parts availablity if this is a volvo drive? Is the transom assembly different? Engine parts? I thought at this point the drivetrain has 100% volvo parts availablity. Also, if the donor he is talking about buying was built before 94 would it even work on his 98 'omc' drivetrain?

That being said. If I saw a $500 or less boat with a Merc 165 drivetrain in good working order I would jump on it assuming I had $500 ( I have seen several in my area but didn't have $500) Just to have the spare parts.

well I think I proved there is more that one way to stink up the place. lol no harm done.

If parts for omc eqip are as hard to get as every says they are buying the doner is sounding better by the day.
