Greetings. I am brand new to the forum. I have been reading and studying older aluminum runabouts on this site for a while now and I need a little advise from the knowledgeable people on this forum.

I was looking very seriously at a 1963 Alumacraft runabout, decent shape but needs restoring, has a older 35hp engine that runs fine but I was not really interested in the engine because I was going to replace with a new, larger one when the restoration was complete. Steering has been converted. Needs seats (bench) redone and floorboards. Nice later model trailer.

Then, along came an equivalent StarCraft. It may be a Jet or Jetstar. Red over white. Has back to back seats. Has an old engine that I am not interested in either. The trailer is serviceable, but nothing to write home about. Needs about the same level of restoration. Steering has not been converted.

I am interested if one has more intrinsic value compared to the other. The Alumacraft can be had for $1000, maybe a little less. The StarCraft is $600 or a little less. Both boats are all original, trailers are not. Both trailers have new tires and bearings.

Thanks in advance for opinions and advice.

Re: Starcraft v. Alumacraft Help!

Welcome to iboats.

Regardless of which boat you decide to get..... they both require restoration.

I would lean towards the starcraft (I am partial since I own 3).

Take a few minutes and read through the restoration section.... this will give you a good grasp of what's ahead.

Just FYI there is no collector value in either boat. Both boats are about equal...... I would go with the cheaper of the two.

I like those jets. Got any pics of either? Like Bob said, neither is particularly "collectable" or anything like that.

I think I'd be more interested in which one of the two hulls ( if different ) had a better "ride" and how stable they are at rest.
