I need to get back to this project. It's almost Spring??? Last year I installed a new tachometer, but it seems to read significantly lower than it should. Possibly as much as 25%? It's a 20 pole, but I set it to the 12 position. The documentation I have (manual) shows that a '76 75 hp is a 12 pole? Maybe I simply need to change it to the 20 pole position? I'm not absolutely sure it's a 20 pole system. Thanks all!

I never did get my 1969 to work right in either the 12 or 20 settings (or the others for that matter) and was advised to try a tinytach which I'll do this season :)

Randy: That engine is a 12 pole alternator. If you are using a combination tach you should set it to the 12 pole position and use the purple wire for signal.

If you are using a standard tach, you should use the white wire for signal and set the tach to position "3" (three pulses per revolution)
