You know, that's interesting how OMC put them in way back when and Merc didn't do it till they changed the lineup. Kind of backwards thinking like their initial use of carbon steel driveshafts, rather than SS like OMC used for years. I remember seeing a shaft back in the mid '60's that was from a salt water engine, and it looked horrible. I'd bet getting the bottom end to split was a big problem too....getting the splines to release.
But, like I said before, maybe they thought them to be a reliability issue (in salt water) and decided to do the 40kv ignition to make up for the omission.
