I just bought a 1986 Mariner 90 hp inline 6 and was wondering if it has a thermstat. I bought a clymer manual that coves several diffrent engines, but I cant find the thermstat on the inline. I'm going to replace the impeller but don't know about the thermostat and if it has one.... HELP

Most inline 6s do not have a thermostat. Look up your motor on the crowleymarine.com parts book to be sure.

NO thermostat in the classic inline 6 engines ( up to 1988 ).

You know, that's interesting how OMC put them in way back when and Merc didn't do it till they changed the lineup. Kind of backwards thinking like their initial use of carbon steel driveshafts, rather than SS like OMC used for years. I remember seeing a shaft back in the mid '60's that was from a salt water engine, and it looked horrible. I'd bet getting the bottom end to split was a big problem too....getting the splines to release.

But, like I said before, maybe they thought them to be a reliability issue (in salt water) and decided to do the 40kv ignition to make up for the omission.
