Evinrude 9.5 Carburetor Question

1964 Evinrude 9.5 Recently rebuilt the carburetor with a new kit, cleaned carb in ultra sonic cleaner, replaced fuel pump, gas line?s, etc. The engine will start, & idle fine. It will even turn great RPM?s when in neutral. When you put the engine in gear there is not enough power to plane the boat. The old carb float had started deteriorating very bad, this is the reason I rebuilt the carb. I have cleaned the carb, adjusted the float, checked point, plugs, etc. Is this a to much gas problem? If you choke the engine it will respond and flood out. Please help.

Check to see if you have good spark on both plugs. If you do then look for a spun prop hub.

Re: Evinrude 9.5 Carburetor Question

Plugs are good with .30 gap, prop was working fine before I rebuilt carb. Motor just doesn't seem to even try to go to full rpm's when in forward. It does not miss or backfire. Starts, idles, etc. Just great. Also on the needle valve for the mixture is there a seat that can be removed? Could this possible be the culprit? Other history on motor it ran just great before I replaced the items stated in the earlier post. I replaced the fuel pump due to a cracked fitting, thats when I decided to clean the carb & rebuild also. I also put the new lead core plugs in. I have another carb on a 9.5 Johnson 1965 I thought about trying it.

Sure sounds like it's running on one cylinder. I'd still check spark even though it worked before.

Not if it's idling properly, that only has an effect when the motor is idling, not at full speed. Still sounds like it's dropped a cylinder, spark or compression.

Re: Evinrude 9.5 Carburetor Question

OK You guys really know your engines!!!! I have one dead cylinder but not sure how to check the condenser or the coil. Points did gap @ .20 I do have a repair manual on its way. I also have another 9.5 1965 model that is firing so I could swap parts but would rather know what part is bad so I can order a new one. I am an electrician by trade so I have multi meters etc. Just no sure how to trouble shoot. Thanks again, I will up date when I figure it out.

Re: Evinrude 9.5 Carburetor Question

Condensors rarely go. If the points are clean and gapped right they should be good. Coils usually always go. Are they newer? Or are they old the ones? Sweaty looking or cracked? If they're old, just replace em, don't bother testing. They'll only get you later when you're away from the dock and they're only $20 each or so... Make sure it's not a dead plug. Rare but possible. Just swap the plugs to be sure. Lastly, it could be the wires if not in good condition. But 95% of the time it's the old coils that are toast and should be replaced...

Re: Evinrude 9.5 Carburetor Question

Points may be gapped @ 20 but they gotta be shiny clean, a little dirt on them and no spark. As Samo said, cracked coils are a dead give away, if they look new make sure the plug wires are seated all the way into the coils, sometimes they get pulled out by not having enough lead on the wires when they are installed, one twist of the throttle on an incorrect install and it's dead cylinder.

You wouldn't happen to live in Ottawa do you, I had a bead on 2x 9.5's that got away on me in the summer, 1 was a parts motor and 1 was good. Not too many guys have 2x 9.5's. :D

Re: Evinrude 9.5 Carburetor Question

I ordered 2 coils and a tune up kit including points & condenser.($63 shipped to my door) I also will be receiving a manual on cd form Canada within the next few days so hopefully I can get it going soon. I did just recently purchase a whole complete motor not running a 1965 9.5 Johnson ($100 cash) it does fire and has good compression so that will be the next project when I finish this one. Thanks for all the information I will up date when I get it going.:) Oh yea I live in North Alabama just a little south of you guys!!!!!
