He not that "excited" about his own rifle, ok, guys I would have peed myself for a real 22 at his age......so I am thinking I would get a nice 10/22 Ruger, and maybe when he changes his mind, it can be "his" ,.....oh damn his mother/MY EX for being the same ;0

Just my opinion ........ but I like to start the younger ones on a bolt action...... well that was my first. My Dad used to make me keep an empty shell in the chamber for safety.

I got my first 22 at age 9, but that is because we lived in Alaska. I too had to walk around with an empty casing for at least 6 months to practice muzzle safety.

The Ruger is an excellent choice.

Man, I remember when my dad gave me my first gun. It was his rabbit / squirrel .410 bolt action shotgun before it was given to me. Shot my first squirrel with it at about your sons age . The day he gave it to me , years later, I was floored.

A couple decades later, he has now given me one of the Stevens Favorites, the one he had given my grandfather. Talk about excited!!

I cannot imagine not being excited about your offer at the age of 11!

BTW Just Jason- I have the 10/22 as well , the Target version , talk about fun cheap shooting!!:)

Kids are a little diffrent these days, case in point brother gave his son a honda xr 80 dirt bike, didnt use it, now the brothers a big time outdoors person, hunting and fishing etc, the sons not! computers, school, work, girlfriend. I guess you just let them find they're way, and someday you may find that they come around to some of the things you enjoy. Time will tell.

He may not be a traditionalist... he may not like plain jane wooden stocks... ya might need to jazz it up a bit. Something like my evil black rimfire 10/22 "space" gun, now with laser/light combo!

I kind of agree on not getting an 11 year old a semi-auto and getting them a bolt gun....When I was a kid, I toted a semi-auto all over our farm. As soon as I was outta sight, I was blowing thru ammo like Rambo...If you get him a bolt gun, he may be more likely to "make the first shot count"......Of course if the kid isn't into guns, it won't matter what you buy.

The last thing I would want to do is buy a kid a 10-22 with crap bolted all over it to make it look like an "assault rifle"....Yeah, I know that is a political word.........Of course, I don't understand why anybody would want to bolt all of that crap on a .22 in the first place.

Thanks. I inherited the gun from a close friend a few years ago. I just added the laser and light last year. I have the scope zeroed for CB caps and the laser set for standard .22LR ammo. It's my pest control gun and gets used very frequently.

xxxflhrci - As for taste in firearms... different strokes for different folks. Not everybody has to be the same. Having a differing view doesn't make it crap. Personally, I'm proud of my dead friends gun.

For the youngster, I'd personally recommend just getting him a BB gun and wait until he's a bit older for a real firearm. Ammo is cheaper and mistakes are not as severe or costly. Your call though.

I've been shooting since I was 3 and got my first BB gun at age 10. Didn't get a real gun until I was 14, but it was a 20 gauge for hunting.

Don't know what the laws are in CA, but I bet they're pretty restrictive regarding kids and guns.

He's plenty old enough for a real gun. I was 6 and had my first BB gun and 9 and had my first shotgun, a 410. Now I pulled the trigger on that thing one time and didn't again for many years, but hey, it was my gun.

Whatever he gets, he is to NEVER be allowed unattended with it.

It's definately a good rifle. He can trick it out as he gets older as well.

I threw on a target bull barrel, synthetic stock and target trigger. I sold the old parts on e-bay and that paid for most of the goodies.

Looks like wicked fun. Have you tried talking and asked him what he is interested in. I loved shooting when I was a kid but I liked summer more because we took the neighbor girls with us. boat +beach+girl=bikini=fun:D
I know he's only 11 but thats about the age when you start noticing the difference. just find something he likes to do and do it with him you might even pick up a new hobby for yourself.

Forget the .22. Start him out right. Get him a Marlin 45-70. Great for plinking. :D
