I spent the day Saturday at the boat show in Cincinnati. I engaged in conversation about my '89 Johnson 150GT VRO with more than one dealer and indipendents. The warning horn isn't working and I plan on repairing it before first water this year. Everytime I mentioned the VRO I was advised to either upgrade it, or eliminate it and mix the fuel. I'm not against eliminating it and mixing fuel, but what is the issue of the VRO as long as there is an operating warning horn? I'm sure that upgrading is expensive if even available. The VRO is using oil and smoking so I assume it is working correctly. So I thought I would review the advise of the forum opinions, What would you do?

You'll get opinions from both sides on this issue. I also have an '89 Johnson 150. I am still using my VRO without any problems. My warning horn works and I feel comfortable with the setup. Many will say, "why take the chance...bypass it" but I'm very happy with the VRO.

vro and vro 2 are variable rate mixers, and known to fail. OMS oil mixing system, delivers 50:1 constantly and is much more reliable. yes, it is $400 to replace. your decision.

The VRO2 pump is a very good pump - I still use mine from 1988, but as a premix pump. Since it only takes a few minutes and costs nothing to switch, the option is there for me to reconnect the oil tank should I so choose.
