Any idea why someone would poke holes in the dust caps?

In looking at my tires on the boat trailer today I saw that all four of the dust caps had a hole in them like a punched by a nail. I'm not sure why the previous owner would do this bus it seems to my like it could be a problem.
Water and bearing don't mix well.

Are they large enough to screw a grease zirk into? The threads on a grease fitting are basically pipe threads and screw into punched holes very nicely.

Maybe look around on those hubs(back side) for a zerk fitting for adding grease to bearings and the guy poked a little hole in the dust cap to give the old/excess grease to squirt out of, rather than out of the bearing seals? Just an idea to check it out. Good Luck!

Like someone suggested, maybe that was someone's homemade attempt at bearing buddies. Either the zerks fell out or maybe they used a needle type fitting on the grease gun to inject grease. Either way, real Bearing Buddies might be the answer - along with a bearing repack and new seals on the back side.
