Just like cars, there's a minimum market price for "if it's running" which, of course, will vary with where you are. In a lot of areas the 9.9 is popular (valuable) due to fishing lake size restrictions. 50 hp is a breakpoint on insurance; that's why they make 48 hp.
Around here, I'd say if it's old but it's running:
<9 $250
9-18 $350-$450
18-35 $450-550
50-70 $700-900
90-115 $900-1200
Can't say about bigger ones.
After the minumum, you will add $$ if it's newer, or features like SS prop, recently worked on, 4 stroke, fresh water only, etc.
The best test for a $350 motor is: do you trust the seller and if so, has he maintained it well? As a part of "maintaining well" include does he know what to do?That overcomes a lot of testing, except perhaps the compression.
