I found a 1977 9.9 evinrude outboard. It is in excellent shape, runs good, and has been garaged kept. I haven't ever purchased a motor like this before and was just wondering if $350 is a good price or am i getting ripped off.
your opinions would be greatly appreciated

Re: Question about a used outboard

A 9.9 is a very good motor. Depending on the area, $350 could be a good price if it is in excellent shape. Definitely overpriced if it has been a salt water motor.

It is the north Ga area and from what I was told and the best I can tell it hasn't touched any salt water. It doesn't look like it has ever been out of the mans garage.

If it's as you described its a great price. (for around my area anyway..Ohio). If you don't buy it I might drive to Ga and buy it !!

thanks for the help, I believe I'm going to get it saturday. I would do a compression test, but I've never done one before and I don't want to look like an idiot messin around with someone elses motor.

if it's not too late...the compression test is easy; the instructions are on the tester, which costs about $30 at an auto parts store. But it may take two people--one to hold the tester and read it; the other to pull.
You are looking for the readings to be about 10% within each other. Others will ahve to tell you the range for that motor.
If it were me, if it's running, at that price get it and don't worry about it.
Get the water pump replaced after you buy it.

also they can be tricky about tilt release and other stuff--get your seller to go over it with you. Some have to be in gear to tilt. Some have no kill switch (add one) and some will start in gear.

I have seen a few 15's from the 80's in that range around here...so it seems kinda high....but condition is everything..low hours and in great shape...it should be worth that price.

You're getting ripped off. You can get a new one for only 5 or 6 times that amount.

Re: Question about a used outboard

Just like cars, there's a minimum market price for "if it's running" which, of course, will vary with where you are. In a lot of areas the 9.9 is popular (valuable) due to fishing lake size restrictions. 50 hp is a breakpoint on insurance; that's why they make 48 hp.
Around here, I'd say if it's old but it's running:
<9 $250
9-18 $350-$450
18-35 $450-550
50-70 $700-900
90-115 $900-1200
Can't say about bigger ones.

After the minumum, you will add $$ if it's newer, or features like SS prop, recently worked on, 4 stroke, fresh water only, etc.

The best test for a $350 motor is: do you trust the seller and if so, has he maintained it well? As a part of "maintaining well" include does he know what to do?That overcomes a lot of testing, except perhaps the compression.

Re: Question about a used outboard

I sold a 75 last year for $600, but it was redone and in mint condition so $350isn't crazy money for that motor. I bought it for $250 with tank- repainted and went through the motor, probably had another $200 into it with paint and parts and labour.
