I need a glossary

I've been searching through here and can't seem to find a glossary of boat types.

For instance, What is a cuddy cabin? Boston Whaler? tinny? etc.

Is there anywhere that defines the different styles of boats? (something illustrated would be great)

Great questions. How about defining these, as I've always wondered:

Cruiser
Pocket Cruiser
Cabin Cruiser
Express Cruiser
Convertible
Trawler

Re: I need a glossary

Boat Manufacturers: Boston Whaler, Crestliner, Lund, Tahoe, Bennington, etc.

Boat Style/Type: Bow rider, Cuddy, row boat, bass boat, pontoon, deck boat, canoe, kayak, barge, etc.

Hull Types: V-hull, deep-V, semi-V, catamaran, scow, etc.

Hull Material: Aluminum, fiberglass, wood, composite, and yes, in years gone by there were even "concrete" boats.

Models: Each boat manfacturer has a model designator for each model in their line-up. Just like Malibu is one model of Chevy, Navigator 165CS is just one model from Alumacraft Boats.

As for the name of stuff on any boat, the link shown in a previous post should tell you what you need to know.

Re: I need a glossary

this will tell you ALL the secrets to life
wikipedia

So what would the boat in your signature be? Is it a cuddy? What's the proper term for it.

I did find some info on wiki under "motorboats" but still not quite what I was looking for.

(Also found an article on Paul Allens yacht "Octopus". I want one!)

Thanks for the responses so far.

John,

Great replies above. I am relatively new to the forum too and have learned a great deal from these guys and when I don't undestand a term being used I google it or use a dictionary (old school!). Many guys are real willing to help here and the best thing is, for the most part, they all know of what they speak!

Re: I need a glossary

Cruiser a larger(22-26ft) rig that is not primarily used for fishing
Pocket Cruiser a smaller(16-22ft) rig that is not a fishing rig
Cabin Cruiser a larger(26-30+ft) rig that you can sleep 4 people on comfortably, often seen with aft cabins(cabins under the stern deck)
Express Cruisera Sea Ray style hull wth cabin...see cabin cruiser
Convertible a tuna style boat with huge towers that have canvas that can be removed
Trawler a boat used for dragging nets to catch yummy stuff from the ocean

Re: I need a glossary

a cruiser is a boat that really serves no purpose other than to be on the water and blow through fuel like nobody's business lol....

The boat in my sig is a cruiser.... It sleeps up to 6 (2 per bed) and has a toilet stove sink shower microwave a/c heat etc....
When you search wiki search for the specific term you are seeking instead of vague searches for everything at once.... this is guaranteed to keep you busy.... when you search "cruiser" you will come up with all sorts of things including motorcycles..... then you add a term you are pretty sure will apply to what you are looking for such as "cruiser boat"

Re: I need a glossary

cuddy-a boat with enclosed forward bay, usually sleeping quarters with no ac. and no head. or large performance boats -"cigarette boats"
boston whaler-usually a center console boat with little seating and no sleeping quarters, mostly open water fishing.
tinny- usually refers to any alum. boat.
cruiser-boats that are set up with smaller engines and larger fuel tanks, can be any size.
bocket cruiser-a "smaller" boat that has a inclosed cabin. no ac. or head
sail boat-speaks for it self
catameran-a boat with two hulls.
bowrider- usually a boat with seating forward of windsheild.
There are SO! many variations of any given boat configuration, that it makes it hard to discribe exactally.
GOOD guestion!!
Hate to think how many people will correct me on this!

Now we're really getting someplace! Thanks.

Is there any terminology difference between a boat such as Smokeonthewater's and a taller cruiser type boat? It seems that SOTW has a 2 deck boat. What would you call a three decker. I have so little experince with v-hull boats that I can't even come up with a make or model to compare.

I guess I'll have to take a walk through the marina and right down model numbers.

Thanks everyone so far

Re: I need a glossary

not all 'cruisers' have small engines. I have twin 260's and some have bigger.... it's more the basic shape and hull design that earn a name.... as for mine verses a 3 deck..... mine is typically called a big boat.... the 3 level is a *%*& big boat 4 being *^$%* *&%*% big boat with a pause and #&^%^:D when you get bigger and slower you start getting into house boat territory.... Is there a point to this? are you boat shopping or writing a book or what? If there is something specific you need to know I'm sure folks will be glad to help. Any of the below you can't find? anything else

basically you have
john boats
row boats
bass boats
center console fishing boats
ski boats
bow rider
closed bow
run abouts
cuddy's (cross between run about and cruiser)
cruisers
sport boats (fast by design)

I did something bad last week. I took a walk through the marina and looked at all the boats for sale. Now I want one.

Of course I still have to get the pontoon paid for but I'd like to do the great loop once I retire (about 10 years). So I'm trying to get myself a little educated so that when big boat buying time comes I'll know what to get.

(When I bought my pontoon I knew more about the boat than my dealer did, down to the MSRP of add ons. I firmly believe in doing my homework)

From my browsing today I think what I'd be looking for is a sedan bridge type boat. I'll have to do some more looking. I figure between now and then I can learn enough to find a steal at the right time.

BTW, any boat I own would be a John boat.

Thanks again

Re:smoke

I gave a generic responce, not knowing what he was looking for. I know that cruisers have big motors. NO offense, but if "I" were looking for a cruiser, I would be looking for the smaller engines, considering that I would be running both at the same time. It's a fuel per. hour thing. I am not in a hurry!
