I am looking for a shift lever for a 1967 6hp Evinrude outboard. I have looked on BRP website, but they want $125 for a piece of aluminum. I have emailed a bunch of outboard salvage yards but only 2 have responded and there selling a new part for $90. I have looked on Ebay and emailed sellers for over 2 weeks without any luck.

Does any have or know someone who has an 6hp shift lever for 6hp Evinrude year 1967 and is willing to sell it for a reasonable price. My understanding that Evinrude/Johnson 6hp outboard shift levers for year 1965 to 1977 will fit my motor.

I know this site is not the classifieds or ebay, but I'm getting frustrated and hoping for some luck. Also I don't know any welders or machinist that would repair or fabricate a part.

Thanks for any help!

I am in the same boat. Mine broke off, but there was enough left so I made one out of aluminum stock and screwed it on what was left.

Mine broke also. Now this is not just a small piece of aluminium ... there is a hiden shaft that connects inside the motor. At my local shop $ 250.+ installed. Nevertheless they did recommend I screw on some sort of piece of metal or wood, then cover it with 5 min epoxy then paint it ... which is exactly what I ll be doing.

Last summer we just had a pair of small vice-grip on it and it worked out perfect ... but was ugly ... LOL

Cheers

I'm trying not to do that, but may end up doing as you stated. I bought this motor a couple of weeks ago to restore, but for the life of me I didn't see that the handle was broken when I bought it. Well, I didn't pay that much for the motor....$75, so I can't complain. If I can find one for a reasonable price, I'll purchase it and install it. Looks like a little bit of work, but not too bad. Thanks for suggestions!

If your looking for the factory look a cob job may not be for you.
I would revel in the fact I created a lever and saved a bunch.Obviously the shift is a weak point you could end up in the same boat after you replace it.
With a little tinkering and some paint you might be able create a nice homemade handle.

Well, I have a couple of nibbles, so in the next couple of days I'll see if can set the hook on a used shift lever. If I can't land one then I'll some how fashion an attachment. Thanks for all the really good suggestions!!!!

Oh, I send dozens of emails to salvages yards and only 2 responded back with offers for new shift levers ranging from $85 to $125 plus shipping:eek:

Mine broke off after the shaft and part of the 90 degree bend, so there was enough left to bolt on a 90 degree bent piece of flat stock to make the handle. I made it longer than the original, since I use the 6 as a kicker.
A rig job for sure, but it sure beats paying 100 bucks for something that is the first thing to break if the motor falls over.

Seems they all break at the 90 degree bent piece. There is usualy enough metal left for a makeover of some sort that beat the high cost of the part replacement. My dealer friend suggested I would carve one in wood ... but wood on metal I dont know ??? But I definitly will build one myself ... LOL

Re: HELP: Looking for a 6hp shift lever

Score!!!! Just bought a good used shift lever for $22.50. The price also includes shipping as well. Emailed a guy parting out a 1972 6hp Evinrude. I don't think he knew or looked up the value of the part. :). The guy even sent a picture of the part and it is in good condition.

Twin city outboards were offer a good used 6hp shift levers for $45.00 plus shipping. I was about the get one from them but got a better deal from the guy mentioned above.

Thanks for all the suggestion and advice. I think after I replace the old shift lever, I will try to rig up a fix as a back up for the future.

If BRP is stocking it, chances are that Sea-way Marine has it too. They are an authorized BRP NOS warehouse, so their prive may be the same, but it never hurts to ask.
