Re: Completed Boat Project

I am hoping to get 3-4 years out of her. Plan on keeping it covered during the summer to keep the weather out. The boat was given to me by a friend and kept the johnson that was on it. I dont have but $1500.00 invested in the whole project.

Re: Completed Boat Project

I used Rustoleum oil based paint. I put 2 heavy coats on it and then mixed in some sand and put a third coat down. Total cost for the paint was $20.00. Like I said, low budjet project.

Are you referring to paint on the deck under the rubber mat..or somewhere else? I was interested to know what type of paint you used around the console, and how you applied it.

Would that Rustomleum Oil based paint be a good choice for a ski locker? Mine had carpet in there and I am getting rid of that.

Re: Completed Boat Project

I used the rustoleum oil based paint on the whole topside deck on the boat. I then came across that piece of rubber diamond plate flooring and thought it would be a good idea. I took some 80 grit and scruffed up the floor a bit and then used some 3M to put it down. I did alot of reading on the rustoleum and decided to give it a try. Plus I did not want to spend $100.00 for a gallon of the other stuff. Like I have been saying low budjet project. Below are a few pictures after the floor repair was done and just after paint and another complete.

Re: Completed Boat Project

Greetings,

Very nice resto, I can only hope mine comes out that good. I purchased flooring material almost identical to that for my boat through Cabelas. A role that is about 6' wide and 3' long costs $25.00. It is made for boats.

Very nice...I will pick some of that up forsure. Did you just seal the floor edges with 3m, or did you run some fiberglass up the edges too?

I think this should be a model for a budget restore, great work!

I fiberglassed around the edge of the entire floor. 3 inches on the floor and 3 inches up the hull and compartments.

Re: Completed Boat Project

UPDATE ON THE FLOOR !!!!!.

Well I have had this floor down for about 2 months now and things are not working out the way I had planned. Although I thought it was a great alternative to carpet and it looked GREAT it is with deep regret I will be pulling it back up. In cooler temps and without the sun beating down it does really well, the problem is when the temp gets hot and the sun is beating down it does not want to lay flat. The flooring starts to ripple and come loose from the glue. It?s not in just one area but pretty much the whole floor. I have tried everything, even a different type of glue with blocks sitting on the floor for days hoping the glue will set. I have spent the last 2 weeks trying to get it to lay down to no success. There is a lot of expanding and contracting due to temp with this flooring. The floor becomes real rubbery and also it seems to hold a lot of heat to it. Almost too hot to walk on with your bare feet. So with all this said I would say this is a failed alternative to carpet. There may be some if this type flooring better suited for outdoor use but this is not one of them. I will be taking up the flooring this week and sanding it back down and installing some marine carpet which is what I should have done in the first place. I know people don?t like to talk about their failures but this is one idea that did not work out.

Re: Completed Boat Project

Well it's awfully thoughtful of you to be honest about the shortcomings of the floor...especially since folks on this site may be considering using it.

Have you considered marine vinyl as an alternative to carpet?

At least you got the diamond-plate for free:)

Re: Completed Boat Project

Thank you, I did consider the vinyl flooring but I already have the carpet. I had the carpet originally and then came across this flooring and decided to give it a try. To be honest I am about tired of messing with the flooring and ready to get out in the water and do some fishing.

What color is it? Have you considered trying a lighter shade?
