Re: water leak

Water leaks in from the Mercruiser outdrive, is this a do it yourself fix, & how tough is it?

is this a do it yourself fix,
Depends on your abilities. If you aren't mechanically inclined, then it's probably not.

& how tough is it?
Hard to say without knowing what's leaking, could be as simple as replacing the shift cable bellows, or you may have to pull the engine and transom shield and replace the rotten wood in the transom.

Re: water leak

The boat is a 1983 Wellcraft. The only info on the outdrive is a sticker on the inside top, it says Mercruiser transom assembly ser. no 6681050, can't tell where it's leaking other than from inside, it comes through the outdrive.
I am new to boating but good a mechanics. I have ordered a repair manual, is there any hope for me?

Howdy Jim,

sure there's hope for you!

Donno about your leak though until there's more info.

can't tell where it's leaking other than from inside, it comes through the outdrive.

Until you know where the leak is coming from EXACTLY, there's really no way to know if you can fix it by just replacing the shift or main drive bellows.....

Also, if it is due to a main drive bellows leak/crack/break etc.... (depending on how long it's been leaking) you may have a "whole lotta" other problems too! You might want to drain some drive oil and see if there's water intrusion....

Rick

Sure hope you didn't order an aftermarket (Seloc or Clymers) manual, if so, then at least you will have something to put a little humor in your life, they really are a joke.

HOWEVER, If you go up to the adults only sticky at the top of this forum, and go to the Merc service manual link, you can download (free) the OEM service manual for your engine and outdrive. #3 manual will cover your engine, and probably #4 for your outdrive.

That's not bad Don. ;)

Jim - I don't know if I am the only one who doesn't understand that or not... but when you say it comes through the outdrive, how do you know?

Are you saying it is coming in somewhere behind the engine? Get a little more descriptive and we can help solve the leak.
