Hi,

Does anyopne have suggestions on how to convert Loran Numbers to Latitude / Longitude? Also, how bad will it effect the accuracy?

Thanks, Jim

If your Loran doesn't do it automatically, You have to plot them on a chart that has the TD lines on them. Then convert to Lat & Lon on the chart.

Loran is NOT very accurate.

If you looking for a wreck or a bump or structure the conversions arnt worth the time and paper. Every Loran machine reads differently. They are pretty accurate for the same machine getting you to the same spot but when you convert them they can be WAY off the spot.

we all know what pos stands for.....

From the PosAid FAQ -- #1
How accurate is PosAid?
Depending on Loran geometry, the accuracy of the PosAid software is 1/4 to 1/2 mile.

$100 garmin is 100 times more accurate than loran ever was. With loran going out it's probably not even worth the effort to do the math.

Is Loran down? I heard they killed the funding.

If it's still up best thing would to take the boat out for a day with both units on board. Navigate with the Loran and and mark all your honey holes with the new GPS.

Yes they are terminating the Loran system. Here is a snippet from the USCG web site.

LORAN-C Termination Information

The Coast Guard published a Federal Register notice on Jan. 7, 2010, regarding its intention to terminate transmission of the LORAN-C signal Feb. 8, 2010. A LORAN Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement Record of Decision stating that the environmentally preferred alternative is to decommission the LORAN-C Program and terminate the North American LORAN-C signal was published in the Federal Register on Jan. 7, 2010.

Hate to dredge up old topics, but is there anyway *now* to convert the numbers? From what I've read, I wouldn't even be able to go to the spots and GPS mark them. Are charts my only hope at this point?

Not accurately. Charts could be the best option but if the spots are small good luck!

Great! Once I figure out how to use the Loran, I'll pull the numbers and do the conversion.

Unless your Loran unit has waypoints already saved, you're out of luck.
