Mercury motor year id and fix help

i recently got a 9.9 mercury motor with a boat i just bought. the guy said it was a '98 but it looks older. could you guy maybe tell me the year? also, the motor wont run. it cranks but doesnt wanna turn over and start. I really dont know much about motors so any help will be greatly appreciated.

Need the serial number off that plate on the transom mount to tell the year.

No expert, but by looking at the pics, I don't believe this motor is a 98'. Unless it is a overseas motor, like one made by Yamaha or Nissan. Recently I was on Ebay, and some guy was selling a 1998 Merc 25XD, looked at the pics, the motor he was selling was a 90' at best...and he was trying to lure in someone that did'nt know any better. When you find the date, please post the info you found.

The blue band on the cowl suggests as being an older model

ok, so i believe the motors serial number plate was removed.. that sucks.. i have another mercury motor with the serial number # 7127693 its a 4hp i believe.. could someone tell me the year of this motor.

7127693 is a Canadian serial no for a 1979 model. On the other motor look for a round welsh plug with the number stamped in it.
