I have a Evinrude Zephyr #4404-19248. pretty good shape.

Also a opposed piston twin by Johnson Southbend Motor Co.
Southbend, Indiana
Mod A-35
Ser 68498

The Johnson is probably from the early 30s or thereabouts and maybe 2-3 hp.
It has a 3 blade prop and the whole works is pretty beat up.
Do any of you guys know anything about these dinosaurs?

Re: OLD outboards

I show your A-35 serial # as 1928 model year 1927/1928. 2.5 HP

Re: OLD outboards

The Zephyr is a 1946 5.4 hp and the Johnson is a 1928 2.5 hp according to the serial numbers.

Re: OLD outboards

I have a problem with calling JohnnyRudes that are less than 65 years old, OLD.

So I would agree that the Johnny is OLD, but the Zephyr is merely middle aged. :)

Re: OLD outboards

If you go to the aomcia web site, you should be able to get parts for the Zephyr easy enough. Apparently, they're still relatively common even after 64 years.:D

Re: OLD outboards

I repaired the carburetor (it's a strange one) and it runs like a top!
The Zephyr is the only 4 cylinder opposed piston I've run across.
Whatta hoot.

Re: OLD outboards

The Antique Outboard Motor Club Inc website is a wealth of information about the older stuff. Google AOMCI to locate them. There is no "A" on the end. The CIA is somebody different. This is a pretty active group that has a lot of knowledge available.

Actually, the apposed 4 was a common design up until 1949. The Zephyr was the smallest one of all of them. The 9.7hp Light Four was Zephyr's "big brother" The apposed four was used in rigs as big as 50hp and was also used as storm boat motors used in WWII Nothing like a direct drive 50hp, huh? Better know how to handle it.:D:D
