I have a 1970 40 hp Mariner and can not get the forward and reverse gears synchronised with motor. I can not find a repair manual anywhere. I did find a manual for 1976 to 1989 but shows nothing on how to get the gears right unless I'm missing something. I need some help please.

What do you mean won't synchronize? Explain what you think is not happening.

Re: 40 hp Mariner gear synchronising

when going into reverse, the motor revs up like it should but the gears grind. Today I did see that a nut down low on the linkage did not have the locknut tight against the other. Maybe thats my problem, we'll see tomorrow. Before the boat was parked 2 years ago after the coils went dead on me, it did not do this but now it does. So don't know why. I got a repair manual and it says nothing on how to adjust the linkage.

So, am I hearing that your linkage isn't adjusted properly and when you select R the shift shuttle doesn't move back as far as it should and the gears are banging their tips against one another?
