Hello. I have a 1967 Johnson 100 hp golden meteor, The factory harness was cut so i dont have the plug that goes into the remote control wiring harness. The motor wiring i think i have figured out. i bought a manual with the wiring diagram.. But the manual doesn't have a diagram for the controls. The controls i have i have been told will work with my motor, They have the round yellow 10 wire harness. The controls are Johnson Hydro electric drive. and im not sure of the year. The colors in the control harness are as follows,
Purple
Grey
Red with a light purplish stripe, bigger gauge
Green
Black with yellow stripe
Purple with white stripe
Purple with green stripe
Blue
White
Brown
Since i cant find a diagram i cant figure out what wires go where? And the boat shops in my town are less than helpful.. They just want to make a new motor and control sale.... If ANYONE can help me i would be your new best friend! :) Please... im pulling my hair out here..

Thanks

Re: Johnson Control wiring issues

Is your motor electric shift? The control box and harness you have sounds like a later model. I can tell you what the wire colors are suppose to be on a newer model.
Red w/stripe= batt
Grey = tach
purple=ign
purple w/white=choke
black w/yellow= kill wire
blue and green are trim wires
not sure about white brown and purple green
I have an old 100 horse and controls. I will try to look at them. It is raining today. Send me a pm if you havent heard from me in a few days

if not mistaken you motor is electric shift, not hydro-electric. seems like hydro came out in 1968. sending message to Guru.

Correct, your motor is Electramatic shift, NOT Hydro-Electric shift. You have the wrong control and that is why nothing matches. If you do manage to wire up that Hydro-Electric switch to your Electramatic motor you will destroy the clutches or drive shaft in the lower unit the first time you put it in reverse.

You can find a lot of old johnson controls on Ebay, but they aren't as cheap as you'd think, up to $250 sometimes. But you can find some cheaper ones. Craigslist will be the cheapest, but it takes a while longer to find one. Local boat scrap yards are good to, but they also want real money for their scrap.
