When I activate my panel switch for my bilge pump I blow the 5 amp fuse in the fuse panel. Any suggestions as to where I start to diagnose this problem will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Blown Fuse

Disconnect the pump at the pump and try it again. If it no longer blows, replace the pump. If it does you have a short somewhere in the wiring.

Re: Blown Fuse

Check the pump and make sure it does not have something inside stopping the pump from turning.
Turn it by hand and see if it turns freely.
Also Check the wires to the pump and make sure they have not worn a bare spot where it can hit some metal.

Keep this in mind. If it blows like, RIGHT NOW, you have a short. If it takes a few seconds, the pump shaft is most likely bound up...

Re: Blown Fuse

Make it a habit to clean out the bilge periodically. At that time, also pull your pump apart and clean the crap out of it.

I have seen failed bilge pumps sink more boats than people leaving the plugs out!

John
