My 87 60hp Evinrude VRO control box grinds when I put into reverse. If I push it hard into reverse sometimes it works but mostly it just makes one really loud grinding noise. Should I take it apart and take a look? What should I be looking at or am I wasting my time?

Thanks

several possilbe problems, shift rod height go change in last impeller replacement, bad clutch dog, mis-adjusted shift cable, idle speed too high. the shift from neutral to fwd or rev, should be a quick deliberate movement, not a slow movement of the handle. the slow movement allows the clutch dog and gear not to mesh, keep up the slow shifting, and grinding will only get worse. then the motor will not stay in that gear underload.

change you lower gear oil, look for chunks of metal, a few small slivers is normal,

id take the control cables off the motor and try to shift the lever on the motor by hand into forward and reverse...fully and deliberately...

if the clanging noise still persist, then you need to look into problems in the lower unit...

if not, then it is just an adjustment of your control cables from the control box.......

good luck

Bob,

We did shift the lever from the motor by hand and it works fine. I'm just trying to do some trouble shooting before I attempt to open up the Control box.

if you shifted the motor by hand with the lever inside the cowling.. and it shifts fine...then all your problem is in the adjustment of your control cables and that all happens at the motor end!!!!!!

ther emight be two sets of holes up in the control box...but I think your adjustment issues can be resolved by the adjustment of the large dia t knurled knobs on the cables that are captivated inside the motor cowl!!! they thread in and out..... put the motor in nuetral and the shift control in nuetral and see how close the hole int eh cable end comes to the place it mounts to!!

it probably isnt close to linign up...turn that plastic knurled knob unitl the platic cable moves close to the place it needs to attach to the shift arm on the motor....

it is relatively easy to do...the hardest part might be pulling and replacing those funky spring clip retainers and getting that pin through all the openings...guys with big fingers will have issues!!!

good luck
