79 200 compatibility with 86 200 merc

hi guys i have a 79 v6 200 merc 20" leg with ablown powerhead and have found an 86 v6 200 with a25" leg would i be able to exchange legs . cheers

The powerheads will interchange but you may have to swap the internal wiring harness,cant remenber if it used the same number of pins,if same plug and go!!!

Think FB is on track. Think tha '79 didn't "plug in". Tha harness wired directly inta tha motor electrics. So you got a couple a choices on how ya wanna do it. Change tha boat side harness (tha right way) or splice a male plug on to your existing harness if tha '86 still has tha motor harness on it................

Check crowleymarine.com and pull parts on both this might help! has schematics and part numbers that may be same or helpful. Sounds like you want to swap powerheads, because you have two different lengths. Remember you can't use a 20 inch motor when the boat requires a 25 in shaft. But you can go the other way if you jack it up. Just a reminder - my buddy got a short shaft motor for his long shaft boat and thought he was getting a deal- forgot what he was after.

trunk 79 has plug but think it is larger than 86 only hassle will be oil pump alarm 79 didnt have one thanks for help
