I posted a long while back about my no-spark 7HP Eska #1747. I bought a used ignition plate off eBay and it now runs (yea!!). Seems to me I ran across some mention that it's possible to repair one of these assemblies or swap parts from other brands. Anyone know the trick or where I can find out?

WOW what a great website--thanks SO much for the link!

I'm a firm believer in "It's not rocket science" and "It's probably been done before" :D

Re: Can Eska ignitions be repaired??

I'd like to update my own question (for future searches) with a source for refurbished Eska (Gamefisher, Ted Williams, etc) ignition plates. Discount Marine Parts in upper Michigan (906-466-2180) sends these out to the company that builds electronics for Mercury. They strip off the generator coil & CDI module and replace them with new parts. Not cheap at $170 (+ your core) but far cheaper than new & eliminates the #1 failure on these lightweight outboards. My 7.5HP Gamefisher only weighs about 38 pounds and doesn't require lugging along a gas tank. I have to carry the motor uphill to my cabin so weight matters :)

I was hoping to find a bolt-on replacement that could mount under or even outside the flywheel but had no luck. The DIY repair linked above is do-able if you're handy & have lots of time to invest in the project.

For parts on the powerhead, I believe it is better to go to the local lawn and garden repair shop. These are basically just a two stroke Tecumse' powerhead.

Well...yes but the throttle lever rotates the ignition plate which varies the timing. I don't think that's a feature on a lawnmower...

I do wonder if anyone has tried to take one of those tiny CDI units from a lawnmower and attached that to the magneto coil under the flywheel. I have to believe it's not that simple or there wouldn't be so many dead Eskas or such high prices for replacement parts.

I believe the points and condensors are very similar to those used on lawn mowers though, despite the fact that the timing works differently.

It's a potted CDI module that fails on these. Similar to this one:

but the outboard version has a long arm that's used to rotate the assembly to change the timing.

Just bought a 1974 Eska 5 HP

Just bought a 1974 Eska 5 HP

I just bought a 1974 5 hp Eska yesterday... It has no cover, but otherwise in pretty good shape. paid $125 for it. Did I do ok?
Also, guy who sold it had the manual and said you can still buy parts thru Sears?
He's using a volkswagen fuel filter on it, and says that if it starts running a little rough, just check that out.... I think if I put a cover on it, it would help as the carb is exposed?

Anyway, it starts good, and looks like it will do all I want on a 12' alumacraft jon boat!

Any comments? Thanks!

I have a new coil for my 5 hp Eska, the question is, how do you get the old one off- do you have to have it pressed off or what? It looks almost as if it is glued on.
