I'd like to get comments and ideas related to converting an 24 ft boat with an I/O with a bad engine to a regulard Inboard. I'd like to free up the back of the boat.

Would it be hard to do?

Are inboards harder to maintain?

How does an inboard handle comapared to an I/O?

The boat will be used as a fishing boat... primarily trolling.

Let me know what you think?

Ayuh,... The bottom of the hull won't be accommodating to an Inboard....

Fix the I/O...

What I'm doing on my current project refit is to add an 18" Jackshaft between the motor,+ drive...
It'll give me enough room to walk between the motorbox,+ the transom...

I considered the Jackshaft concept also, How's that going for you? Will your exhaust be below floor level? Why not go to a 36" shaft?

I've been looking for a 24-26 fishing boat with an Inboard. but the choices are very limited. Any ideas on make and model? Also any ideas why the builder don't use inboards in their boats?

Better solution, sell what you have and buy what you want. It will be cheaper in the long run. ;)

Ayuh,.... I've found all but 1 part for it,...
Actually, I've found That part as well, just not at the price I'm willin' to pay for it...

Yes, exhaust will be below the deck...

I going with 18" because that's what I want...
That'll give me room to walk between the motorbox,+ transom...
3' would put the front of the motorbox, Right at the helm seat, over-crowding the forward cockpit...
It would also shift the weight that much farther forward,...
I'm Hoping at this point that the 18" doesn't screw up the hulls handling...
After all,... Much of this is sorta a Guessing Game...

there not as common becuase at low speeds single engine inboard boats are very tricky to handle, especially when they are small enough for the lightest of winds to push them around..... therefore not many people desire direct singal inboards...

Re: Convert I/O to Inboard

Thanks everyone for the information. At least it give me ideas to think about. If you know of any more makes and models with the Inboard or below deck motors I did to hear about them.

We got a foot of snow last night so fishin seasons still a few month away.

Any other thoughts are welcome

The jackshaft idea is pretty interesting.

I don't know what your boat's like but have you considered redesigning the engine enclosure? You might be able to cut it down
