Please I was given this motor with a 72 well build trihull with this 85 horsepower force motor and need to find out model and serial due to tag being to faded! Is their any other way to find out the serial and model or can someone tell me the model so I can know where to look for when I need parts?? All suggestions are appreciated.

Re: Name this motor and model number!!

Most parts are available from Mercury dealers, or online.
Not a particularly good motor unless you do you own maintenance and repairs.
Easy to work on, sometimes hard to diagnose ignition problems.
Never let it overheat.
Never forget the oil in the fuel mix.
Most repair shops won't work on it.
Of those that will, few know what they are doing.

Only place to get the numbers is on the id tag on the side of the transom mount, but also check inside the hood, under the carbs.

If you are going to work on it, get a factory repair manual, or a Clymer repair manual. Don't waste your time and money with a Seloc manual.

Look for a plate under the carbs. It will have the model and serial number of the engine. It looks like an '89 to me.

I have a 85hp force too and cant get the numbers off the trasom mount, people have been telling my its best just a spare parts motor.... is that true? it runs really well but just recently i ran a compression check and im about 9 lbs less on the middle cylinder so is there a way to find parts with out the numbers?

Re: Name this motor and model number!!

Many of the normal wear parts are the same in the various models. For instance, many lowers, reeds, coils, flywheels can be swapped among not only in the same horse power range but between ranges as well.

One particular place that parts are different is in carbs. However, you can tell the difference between carb models visually.

You can check the part numbers from places like iboats, russel marine, boats.net etc. and compare the numbers across model lines.

As for your lowre compression, do a good decarb on the engine and then check it again. Instructions for decarbing an engine can be found on the stickys at the beginning of the forum.

Oh, buy a manual if you don't have one. Clymer is the better of the aftermarket versions.

50 to 1 it is.

There is a thread in the FAQ at the beginning of the Maintenance section of the iboats forums that is called Waking up a sleeping motor or something like that. It has some must do items for an engine that hasn't been maintained.

Hint, if you do the suggested items, you won't spend alot of time asking us how to fix the engine after it blew up. ;)

Go to the FAQ in the beginning of the maintenance forums and start scrolling. It is on page two.

On a side note and If one of You gurus knows for sure please correct me. While rebuilding my 88 125 when I pulled the rear leg cover off of it there was a great big 88 cast into the leg itself. That might be a way to narrow down the year on it.

Re: Name this motor and model number!!

WOW thats alot of freaking models for that year! What are the chances that the impeller, fuel pump, carb kits etc would match up with all of those models? Where would be the best places to order them from and what would yalls advice be as for my project. Should I start with the motor or start restoring the boat, also a tree branch fell on it and put a hole in the hull maybe 4" by 4", the gel coat? Paint? on the bottom is still nice and shiny, after I refiberglass it how would I get the high gloss back in that area and would it be hard for it to blend?

Re: Name this motor and model number!!

The best thing I can tell you is to take a deep breath, relax and start to search the Forums. All of what you are going through has been covered countless times before. The information is there if you use the right search terms.

The only engine that will definitely have different parts is an "L" drive. Don't bother with any so named. If you look in your Clymer manual, it will show you the difference in the carb models. Parts are available for carbs, water pump, and fuel pump. The water pumps and fuel pumps should be the same on any 89 modlel you select. There is a guy on Ebay that sells the whole water pump housing, impeller, gaskets and bolts for about $70. Russelmarine, boats.net, iboats, mercruiser and others sell parts.

If after you do your research and find yourself hungup, then come back and tell us what you did so far and what the problem is and we can help you.

This forum works like a "hand up" not a "hand out". ;)

John
