I have a 1999 Yamaha 6 hp that I broke the fin on the lower unit off.Can this be welded. This fin is on the very bottom off the outboard broke off about halfway on the fin.
Probably not weldable, but how about fiberglass it back on, sand it to metal apply resin and woven glass on top and bottom, sand when hard and fill voids with auto body putty.
That's called the skeg and it's purpose is to protect the prop from submerged objects which it sounds like what it did. You can buy stainless steel "Skeg Guards" through marine supply catalogs and stores that just bolt on( if there's enough left of your skeg to bolt to). Otherwise, get yourself a piece of about 3/8" aluminum plate and a hacksaw and a grinder and make one and have it welded on by a good welding shop that knows how to weld aluminum. Take your time and grind it and shape it to closely match the original. If you can't do that then just take it to the weld shop and get him to cut/fabricate/weld one on for you. Good Luck!
