Hi,
Last year I got to use my girlfriend's father's early-70's Johnson 9.5 (or 9.9?) and I fell in love with it. I feel that with my small boat, the light weight of this motor would make a huge difference, and the low profile would not get in the way of my fishing, as my current mercury does
Anyway, I found a 1964 "10 hp" evinrude (I'm assuming it's actually the 9.5) on craigslist. He said it has a prop seal that leaks oil, but doesn't let water in-- I'd be suspicious and want to replace that.
So, a few questions.
1) Is this the same motor as the late sixties/early 70's evinrude/johnson 9.5 and 9.9 motors? I'm having a surprisingly tough time finding pictures of this motor. Mainly what I'm looking for is the low profile (hangs lower in the water) and the lighter weight (at least for a 10hp).
2) Is there anything you can tell me about this particular model that I should know?
3) Is it tough to replace the prop seal to stop it from leaking oil? A quick googling makes it sound pretty easy... makes me wonder why he didn't do it before he decide to sell it.
The motor I'm trying to compare it to is the one here, which is a 1969:
The guy is putting it up for just under $300. I was expecting to pay more like 400 or 500, but, I also was looking for something in the early 70's, and this also has the prop seal concern... so I think the price isn't spectactular, but reasonable, but if you have any thoughts on that, please provide them.
Thanks in advance,
Scott
