Hey Gents,
I'm breathing new life into an old 177? 7.5 HP Merc. I just replaced the impeller and got her pumping water again. Now I see water seeping out around the plugs. I Guess it's time for a new gasket. Otherwise she runs like a charm. I guess it's normal to find one little thing after another when rehabing an old motor.

On a side note. Can anyone tell me what the torque should be on the cylinder cover bolts? The have nuts on the back side. Must they be torqued specifically or just tightened evenly?

Thanks!

Hd,

Post up your serial number and we can check the year. If it is 177? then I would hang on to that engine!!! You have a very rare item :D

Torque for the bolts should be 100 in-lbs, using a standard circle pattern.

Chris,
It's 3730520.

It's been a pain to find parts. It runs like a charm so that's the big thing. It started on the first pull yesterday. Just needs the usual small stuff fixed after sitting unused for 20+ years. I replaced the impeller to get it pumping. Now I need the cover gasket. I need a prop nut also and that's it. The motor is in fantastic shape. Looks new under the cowl. I have it sitting with the LU in water to make sure the seals don't leak.

I think I have a real gem here. I can't wait to get on the water with it.
