Last year I aquired an old fishing boat that also came with an 18hp seahorse Model FDL-14. I know there is a similar Model FD-14 but what is the difference between the two? what makes mine an FDL and not an FD?

I believe the FDL is a long shaft and FDE would be electric start, but FDE does not show past 1958.

sounds good. but let me ask you this, my FDL-14 is listed as 18HP wherever I look on the net. and the FD-14 as 10HP. the cover on my moter says seahorse 10 meaning its 10HP right? but as I said before, the model number on the motor says FDL-14? I'm a bit confused.

Help a green man will ya!

FD-14 is a 1960 18hp Short shaft (at least it left the factory as a short shaft)
FDL-14 is a 1960 18hp Long Shaft (at least it left the factory as a long shaft)

10hp motors are not "FD". 10hp motors are "QD".

Perhaps somebody put 10hp decals on it to get away with running an 18 on a 10 horsepower restricted lake???

Post a picture of the powerhead side views and we can tell you the horsepower.

Sometimes people put different hoods on to "fool the man" what gives citations that take away from your water sports and fun!! Read about these people before, but don't know any personally!! It could happen.

My book shows FD-14 is 18.

Yea, I'm willing to bet that somewhere, someone has maybe changed the cowling, but then again, someone could have scratched away the center line from the "8" to make it look like a 10:D:D I think the 10hp and 18hp of the late 50's, like the clam shell type will interchange with each other, but I don't know about the 1960 motors. Those had the fiberglass hoods and were a totally different cowling. Up till 1958, the 18 and the 10 pretty much were the same, except for the powerhead. Both had the same lower units and engine covers. In 1959, the 10's had a smaller lower unit.

I have one of each. Pretty easy to tell the difference.

KB1, you say "Fool the Man". My response is, OH I SEE! said the blind man. this is starting to make sense guys. ok so I'll work on getting the photos in F_R. but let me tell you, it doesn't look quite as or as nice as yours cc67.
In the meantime, I got another one for you guys. today I went out back and checked the motor out and I managed to get it started! (HOORAH!). But as the motor ran for a few, I began to notice some brown foam or goo on the water surface. any Ideas?

Thanks

FD

The QD is a 58 and the FD is a 57. The QD cowling is a little shorter in lentgh too.

I'm going to have to go along with F_R's analogy. Some lakes or waterways are restricted to 10hp and smaller.

That is probably unburnt oil residue from the exhaust.
