I was told that my lower unit on my 1974 Chrysler 55hp motor had damaged gears... I was quoted $550 to get a rebuilt one with an additional $130 for a new water pump does this quote seem reasonable????

Only if you like to pay full sticker price for your cars too!

Gears go about 180 new, drive dog clutch is over 100 new. Water pump and impeller is about 90 bucks new-- rebuilder gets a discount, but you can see where this is going

Yeah, a rebuilt unit from a rebuilder will be pricey, but used ones go for less--How much? depends upon the demand. Keep your eyes open for a junk engine, or a lower on ebay and local marinas.

If your engine is a single carb 55, then any lower from 35-45-55 up to early Force 50 will fit. Get one cheap with a cracked skeg or case and you can swap the gears into yours.
