I have a 1988 75 horse Mariner and the power trim is not working properly. When I attempt to trim it up or down it just clicks. In times past I could tap on the trim motor and it would start working. What I did notice is fluid leaking out where the shaft goes into motor. is there some kind of a shut off to prevent damage to the trim motor when the fluid gets too low? Please help!!!!!

Sounds like a bad trim motor but what shaft are you referring to? And no there is no shutoff for low fluid..

The silver shaft that pushes the outboard up and down.

Ayuh,... The seal on the shaft has nothing to do with the operational problem...
It's a seperate problem all it's own...

It sounds like the Motor needs replacing or rebuilding...
And, that seal needs replacing...

Re: Power trim not working

That the old "square" motor Presolite and it and repair parts are NLA. I recommend you install the API motor/pump assy as it draws less amps, quieter, and 1-1/2 times faster. Just google API part # PT475N for best price and the tilt cylinder repair kit is part #25-41478A1...

Thank you for that information and I found that those parts are available. Is the O-ring hard to replace. Is there a diagram on line I could use for a reference for both of the repairs?
