Johnson 150 OMC Throttle Control "All or Nothing"

Greetings

I have a OMC throttle control unit that seems to be a bit sticky. It goes into gear fine, but when you advance the throttle it seems to stick at the point of the boat going up onto the plane. You then push harder and boy its all or nothing, makes it hard to pull knee boarders and skiers, leaving their arms attached to their bodies.

Any suggestions on how to fix this, I have taken the throttle unit apart and appears to function correctly, I can grease the thing (any suggestions on the grease type would be great).

I guess it could be a motor issue? The motor runs great, Johnson 150 oiler. Could even be the cables.

I was thinking of buying a new throttle unit to solve this problem, but if I can fix it all the better.

Cheers

Disconnect the cables at the motor and see what tension there is on the throttle assembly ... if it is moveable by hand with good return action then look at the cables next

Re: Johnson 150 OMC Throttle Control "All or Nothing"

I removed the cables at the engine end and the throttle on engine seemed to move freely, the spring pressure didn't appear to be too excessive.

I reconnected the engine end and then disconnected the control end, I actuated the throttle on the engine and the cables seemed to move freely with no apparent stickiness.

The OMC control did have some free play movement from side to side, normal wear and tear, I would suggest. The cams inside appeared to move freely and there appeared to be sufficent grease internally.

I am still no closer to solving the problem, any further suggestions please?

Re: Johnson 150 OMC Throttle Control "All or Nothing"

Could depend on what grease was used inside the control box. A regular wheel bearing type grease gets thick and is difficult to shift/throttle when temps are cold. I use a white lithium type grease which stays slippery at lower temps. Cables that are too short and are required to bend tight corners will take more pressure to activate. Make sure they are long enough to make more gentle, rounded bends. Most control boxes have a friction adjustment which will affect throttling of the engine. It is intended to keep the throttle at a specific rpm during long runs. Make sure it is not creating too much drag on the throttle.

Replaced the cable, regreased the OMC control and all is well.

Thank you to those who provided advice.
