How to remove the bearing race from the top cover.
Mercruiser Alpha One.
Is there a special Mercruiser tool for it?
I read all thru the manual and it only advises on how to install a new bearing race, but not how to remove an old one.
Am I missing something there?
Thanks all.

Ayuh,.... Have ya got a Welder,... If so, run a small bead around the inside if the race,+ let it cool...
It'll literally Fall out...

That works ok if you are going to intall a new bearing, but what if you are removing the bearing when trying to get the bearing preload set? you have to reuse the bearing.
I just use a slide hammer. Heat the cover with a propane torch a little and they come out very easily.

Thanks, guys. Don, I dont quite follow how would you use a slide hammer there? I'm replacing that bearing, so the old one is junk. But you are right, what if I need to adjust the preload with a new one?

Use a 2 jaw puller on the end of the slide hammer.... Jaws face outwards... Hook under the race, pull the hammer, race falls on the floor..... Have a beer. :D

Thanks, I managed to use a 2 jaws bearing puller, just flipped jaws inside out and it worked fine,
Now the question is - do you measure preload torque with or without seals?

Just remember, if you have to adjust preload, you will then need to check gear height and backlash to verify.
