Just purchased 90 Chaparral 2000SL Aniversary Edition w/ 305 v8. It has no capacity tag. I was researching that on this board and saw where someone posted that it was only required to have one if your boat was under 20'. Is that true?

I am NO expert but I believe a plate is required on all boats under 26 LOA. Was at boat show yesterday and a salesman told me anything over 26 is considered "yacht" class and does not require persons / weight capacity plate. Again, I am not qualified to answer just passing this along FWIW.

Under the U.S. Coast Guard Federal Boat Safety Act of 1971, boats less than 20 feet powered with an inboard, outboard, or stern drive engine manufactured after November 1, 1972, must display a capacity plate defining the safe load limits. This plate must be mounted where you can see it when preparing to get underway. Sailboats, canoes, kayaks and inflatable boats are exempt from this standard.

I have the same model boat boat as you, it also lacks a capacity plate, I was safety inspected by the ODNR and the officer asked me if I knew where the cap. plate was, I told him if it has one I've never been able to find it. He paused and thought about it for a minute and said well it's 20' so your ok. and I got the safety inspection sticker. This was a state division officer not the coast guard.
And by the way I've seen some 2000sl Chaps. that did have at least a yellow capacity sticker by the controls and it said 10 persons ????lbs. can remember the exact weight max.

20' is the cutoff. Below that, they're required to have it. at 20' and over they aren't. Not sure if it's common practice, but my 24' has a plate. My 21' Pro-Line had one, too.

The fact that some larger boat have 'em and some don't, probably adds to the confusion amongst the enforcement folk.

No, over 20' does not require capacity plate. This is from the Coast Guard Vessel Safey Check Manual http://www.uscg.mil/directives/cim/1...M_16796_2E.pdf page 6-48:

To figure your capacity use the formula below.

Boat length multiplied by beam (boat width) divided by 15
(L x W/15) = with the person weight = 150 lbs.
Number people that can be safely carried in calm waters.

Best way to avoid run ins with authorities is get a the vessel safety inspection, pass and get the decal. It is a free service by the USCG Aux. www.safetyseal.net

i was just about to post the same question. I also have a 20' boat without a plate. Whats confusing me is that ive read: 20' and over is not required. but also read somewhere else:
"OVER" 20' does not require a plate.(which would mean to me, 21' and larger doesnt require it) they dont specify what category a 20' boat falls in?!?! confused!

good enough for me. 20' and over = no plate required. Good to hear. the Chap 2000 SL is 10 persons or 1500 lbs based on that formula. What I wanted to hear.
