Hi All,
I'm trying to find out more information about this boat. I've got a lead on a garage kept boat with low hours. Apparently it has a Volvo 5.0, and I'm unsure as to what the outdrive is / could be. Also, they are saying that the floors are fiberglass. Is this true? The iboats info seems to reflect the same, but I don't know if that means it's fiberglass coated / wood core, or solid glass. In any case, any input would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Sunbirds were low-end. I'm sure it's got wood in it.

I did not realize it was low end. I was under the impression it was built by OMC, who also made rather up-scale boats such as Chris Craft, Four Winns, and Donzi. I guess every boat maker probably has their entry level boat, is that the case with this brand? If so, how does it compare with the likes of other entry level boats such as glasstron and bayliner?

Ayuh,... Sunbirds are comparable to Bayliners as entry level builds...

Thanks. I knew some of the info I was coming up with didn't seem to jive. Of course I'll be doing my duedilligence when I go to check it out, but so far it seems like a clean boat. I've been burned by pictures before, so I don't get my hopes up.

If anyone has any more info / history on them, I'd appreciate it.

IMHO, they score lower than a bayliner. :(

Do you have any way to quantify that statement? I don't know much about them, other than I've seen a few up for sale in my searches. It appears as though it has a volvo / penta combination for the drive, and it's my understanding that's a solid combo. I guess what I'm asking, what about this brand boat makes it score lower?

Ayuh,.. The general fit,+ finish, as well as the quality,+ amounts of the basic materials used...

Thanks! I'll have to take a close look while I'm out there. I'm looking for a budget boat with specific requirements. This just happens to have all the options and layout I'm looking for, so that is why this is on the list. I don't take offense at all. An honest opinion is all I was looking for, and it is appreciated.

I've got a 1991 Sunbird CC that has been in the family since new. They were very popular on the SC coast where I grew up (they were made in Columbia, SC) and you still see them in the area. Again, it is all in how you take care of 'em. Mine is in excellent shape for a 20 year old boat- replaced a few pieces of hardware and that is about it.

My first boat was a 1989 sunbird 20' cuddy. I was the third ownder and bought the boat when it was 10 years old. The blue gel coat was a little faded and the wiring was messy but I don't think the boat was as low quality as some people have said. I sold it after 4 years and the floor and transom were still very solid. I sold it for what I paid for it and was very happy with mine. good luck.

Thanks again. I figure there are lemons in all shapes and sizes. Had a friend with a bum Crowline (which I consider to be a nicer boat). I'll inspect the boat and if it fits the bill, I'll be buying it. Having read what I have from this post, I'll dig into the fit and finish a little more than I might have if it was relayed it's a great boat. In the past my biggest concerns were the motor and floors, but I'm getting more picky in my old age.
