Oklahoma Canoe Title problem

I've looked at 4 used canoes for sale here in Oklahoma and the owners had no idea there was a title and registration law in effect.
They are all about 20 years old so probably were bought before the law was passed. The problem is that none of them have a bill of sale from where they bought the boat. No need to save one anyway, no title laws.
I guess I could get one from Missouri as I believe Oklahoma respects their no title law and will generate one from just a bill of sale.
Is there a solution for this problem with the Oklahoma boats?

Wow, I'd never heard of having to have a title for a canoe before. After reading up on Oklahoma's title law it looks like you could tell them it's for racing and not have to register it :D

You can file for a lost title. Cost is any where from 75 to 125 dollars. There is an office in OKC or Tulsa that can help you out. Send me a private email if you want more info

There never was a title in the first place. No title was required by Oklahoma the year the boat was bought, one was bought in Missouri which stirs the mud a little more. No title, no original bill of sale on any of these old aluminum, read: indestructable, canoes.
Some people claim the OHP won't mess with non motored boats within 50 feet of shore, but I'd hate to have to cross within 50 feet of the dam just to avoid a technicality only to find myself going through the turbines.

Why not just say it bought out of a back yard where it has been sitting for 20 years, so title it now.

Get a bill of sale form the guy you bought it from.

I don't understand the problem? If it never had a title it doesn't exist?

What is the downside of ignoring the problem?

I'm going to paddle 650 miles around Lake Eufaula. How many tickets could I get in 6 weeks you reckon? Not like I could hide or speed away .

I live in OKC and have been through this more than once. Go find a tag agent and explain the situation. See what they suggest. Depending on what they say, your options may be limited. You could find a state that doesn't register or title canoe's and say you bought it there. The tag agent has a book that says what is required to register something from another state. Worst case they will want you to pay all the back registration fees. Been there done that.

Good advice I intend to follow! Thank you.
I don't think it's whether Oklahoma is hard up for bucks but whether they are larcenous at heart. We have the most fee based turnpikes in the nation! They borrowed money from us to build them, promising to quit charging on them when they were totally paid for. The first one and longest was paid for 10 years ago and they are still.......you guessed it: charging. The state of Oklahoma sucks big time when it comes to taking care of its' citizens. They charge $1 a day per canoe to float the Illinois river.

Back when I used to run the Florida Turnpike between Orlando and Pompano, it would run you about $4.50, about $7.50 if you went to S. Miami. Then, BAM!, you paid a $1 no matter how far you went! And they re-did all the service plazas too!

Why do I feel outranked here? All I see is stripes! Do I have to tie a matthew walker knot to get out of the building?

bike? this came from left field. But, no registration for my go fast Giant 21 speed. I'd have to move to Wisconsin if they did that. You may need to get your glasses checked. LOL. Peddle bike and Paddle boat are similar, I know, but not that similar. :)

as a former police officer in the state of OK i assume you are talking about doing a title 42 for a watercraft title? I say this cause filing for a lost title is only $7-$10.

If the age of the canoe is consistant with an era where titles were not issued with the craft then the OHP can issue a hull number and the craft will be treated like a homemade boat. This does require some time having the craft inspected and filing some paperwork, this may be where Woodonglass got his $75-$100 figure.

As for our turnpikes, took a trip last week from Tulsa to OKC down the Turner Turnpike pulling a tandem axle trailer. Cost each way on the turnpike $9.75, total miles on the turnpike one way 85, thats about 11.5 cents per mile.

In reference to the peddle bike issue i assume you are talking about the large 3 wheelers that you can peddle around the water. I can't say as to the registration on them but i do know that the little 2 man bass busters and paddle boats do require registration.

Sorry for the info overload on one of my first few post but i've been lurking for a while and found something i knew something about.:D
