My friend has a chance to purchase 2 of these motors for his Sea Cat. Are there any known issues with these motors. I know that this year also had a 2.5 liter that seems to be the better motor. But I am Merc ignorant.

My experience is that they are good engines... The only thing I'll say is that if you're putting them (or any engine for that matter) on a cat, you'll need to pipe clean air down to them... Cat's are notorious for killing engines though sucking water vapour. They kick up a lot of water mist in the engine wells. Find a properly set up cat and you'll see two huge air ducts (about 6-8" diameter) running from up forw'd. They are plumbed into the engine cowl. That allows the engines to suck dry air.... The average 2 litre engine, at full noise, will suck 100 gallons per minute of salt water at just 5% saturation! OUCH!! I have had the misfortune (more than once :() of seeing what 100 gallons per minute of salty water does to the internals of an engine... Not a pretty site, expect for a new outboard salesman...

Chris....

I had to check the figures twice, as I didn't believe them myself... Here's my working..

2 litres (of air/fuel mixture) per revolution... 5,000 revolutions per minute = 10,000 litres (of air/fuel) per minute.

If 5% is water of 10,000litres per minute = 500 litres per minute.

500 litres = 132 US gallons!

If we say the engine is only 80% efficient at filling the cylinders, that's still 100 gallons per minute!!

Those 95's a are pretty strong engines. You'll be in good shape if they're fresh water motors and have been taken care of.

Re: 1995 150 2.0 any known issues with this model??

thanks for the replies. The Cat has 2 20" 70s on it right now, boat is way under powered. They are in the second holes on the motor mount. If I get 25" shafts and raise the motors up as high as possible, would this be an acceptable alternative? Maybe even use jack plates. Seems like trying to pipe fresh air could be a lot of work and expense, not to mention cutting up the cowls. They are probably salt water motors BTW, hard to find twin 150s that are fresh water only motors down here in the south east.

95's are a little old for saltwater engines. It's not so bad if they run well and don't need any work but the minute they do, you could enter into parts replacement he!!. Broken bolts alone can empty your pockets quickly.

Personnally, I'd look for something newer or find some freshy's.
