1999 Volvo 5.0 GL Oil Recomendation

What oil is recomended for use in my Volvo Penta 1999 5.0 GL? I was planning on using Royal Purple marine oil like this...

If i do use this oil, what is the proper viscosity? Like 15W40 or 20W50 or something else? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome aboard Justin!

I had to edit out the link as we don't allow links in the first post of a thread. Cuts down on spam.

Take a look at the Adults Only sticky above and also do a search for Oil in this section. Oil threads often end up locked as there are so many opinions it is endless. When it comes down to it the only "right" answer is OEM recommendation, all else is personal opinion, and there is no way to get around that . . . I don't run OEM oil anymore so this is not some holier than thou position, but whatever I suggest is easily argued for and against, so again, OEM is the starting point, all else is some personally rationalized deviation.

If you don't want to use the type of oil they suggest, use any good oil. Just about anything works. If you want to know what everybody else thinks, do a search for "oil" and you'll spend until summer reading!

Volvo recommends straight 30 weight oil, Synthetic preferred

I got the following directly from the Volvo Penta Owners manual for that engine.......
