hey i currently have carpet flooring.. i would like to change to a vinyl floor.. anyone have any pics of this installed in their boats? any suggestions? is this a good idea? would the vinyll absorb water? or repel it? i was thinking about adding some drain piping in the deck to help drain water on top.

Re: vinyl flooring

IMHO IF you're talking about something like kitchen vinyl, it will be too slick when wet and water will get underneath and unstick it.

Lol, yeah vinyl flooring would make for some interesting moves when it gets wet. Why do you want to switch from carpeting?

Re: vinyl flooring

I thought about taking my carpet up and having it linex'd anyone do that? I dunno if it will be slippery or not.

Vinyl sounds scary if i can slip and fall on a wet kitchen floor than im sure i could in the boat and possible slip over board. When we do crab pots you have to lean into the sides of the boat for leverage vinyl u might slip out. Good idea tho makes cleaning easier just hose it out...

Re: vinyl flooring

I say get rid of the carpet esp. if you are using your boat for real stuff like pulling crab pots. There are vinyl floor coverings that aren't slippery--we had two Starcrafts with such flooring, back in the day. There are reasons why you don't have carpet in your kitchen, deck, garage, patio, bathroom and laundry room--and those reasons are why you don't want it in a boat. That is, unless you restrict your boating activities to the same things you do in your living room.

There is a vinyl made for outdoor use decks boats what have you. the one I used in my boats is called DekMaster. and it is not slippery and works very well. It is easy to clean and sheds the water to the bilge.
Attached are a couple photos of the boat I am working on.

I just ordered a new boat with vinyl floor in part of the boat. I don't think boating manufactures would install it, if it was slick. That would leave them wide open for law suits. You can get boating vinyl from Bass Pro and Carbels.

The vinyl I'm installing has a deep texture to it. I doubt it's going to be slick.

Re: vinyl flooring

Aren't you guys concerned about moisture getting between your deck covering and deck? I have snap-in carpet for the cockpit of my boat, and it stays in the garage. I have an intense dislike of anything that retains water.

If the cockpit needed cosmetic work I'd paint it with one of the coatings available. I think that no matter how carefully you install a hard covering, you're gonna leave voids, and water always finds a way...

Yup, I noticed this when I was buying my new boat (ended up with the glastron below instead) and thought it was the smartest boat decking I've ever seen. It's actually a rubberized product I think, makes tens times more sense then a musty fish gut covered carpet anyday on a budget boat. My Glastron has a fiberglass deck...hate rotted deck wood! :D
