What's that feeling you feel just as you cross the threshold walking into a big box furniture store?

Not a feeling but rather a question that I ask myself - how can they survive with that many salespeople on the floor?

The feeling that some guy who failed as a door to door salesman is about to control your wife and make you spend money on something that you never had the chance to research for quality.

The feeling that anything this expensive ought to have a engine attached to it. :D

Re: what's that feeling??

Good ones guys...I knew there would be some kindred spirits here. :D

I have to buy a bedroom suite for my mother and have been going to these stores all week. After going to one or two in an evening I'm finding myself craving a stiff to drink.

Huge display rooms, quiet, soft house music, salespersons dressed semi-proffesional.....and hardly any customers. How do these salesperson's survive in this business?

I'm the type that doesn't need help. I need to walk around at a quick pace look at everything and get out. The pseudo-savvy salesfolk reading the prices for you then saying, "I can probably knock some of this off for you."....Of course you can.

The second thing that is frustrating is the quality is so poor. I know why as our society is price point focused, but its down right depressing to see cheaply built furniture for $3500+.

I don't know a furniture salesperson, maybe they like doing it. For myself this week of going to these stores has been a dreary experience.

This is so true. Darn near everything is just CRAP! Particle board with laminate finishes that are ruined with 1 drop of water. And still cost thousands! We've been disappointed with just about all of our furniture purchases. I finally got wise by the time we were outfitting our son's room. All his stuff was made by a company called Baby's Dream furniture. All real wood, quality construction and hardware. And it wasn't even that expensive! So there is good stuff out there but you have to look really hard. I was hoping that Baby's Dream was the children's division of a larger furniture company because I would definitely have bought a bedroom set for ourselves from them. Unfortunately it wasn't.

Thanks, never heard of them before.

Surprisingly, (to me at least) Sears has the best value. IMO of course. Plywood drawers, solid wood trim, dovetails etc. About 30% more than 'average' but I would say more than 30% better quality.

They peddle a collection of business' products, but their buyers do a good job in getting decent quality for the price.

My wife and I did the new bedroom set recently too. I was also apaulled at the prices and lack of quality. I was talking to a friend about the lack of quality and she told me something about furniture that rings pretty true.

"I don't really care if my furniture can last 100 years, because I don't know if I can stand looking at the same headboard in my bedroom for more than 5 or 10 years."

So get the cheap stuff that looks good. You can buy 3 or 4 sets over the next 20 years, and still have spent less money than the "quality" stuff.

Personally I couldn't imagine shopping and buying different furniture every 5 years.

"cheap stuff that looks good" is an oxymoron in my books.

I live in a house built in 1927 and most of our furniture is 80+ years old. We get pieces redone when they need. Furniture that appreciates instead of depreciates is more my 'style'.

But hey, this is for my mom, and her needs/wants are different...her attitude towards antiques is, "I grew up with that furniture, why would I want it now?"...fair enough, and so to box stores I go.
