Re: 1981 Campion Refurbishing

Thanks opps, yes it was a nice time to leave GP - highly recommended!

Well lots has happened again - never seem to get as much done as I`d like

since last post we got the reinforcements in the ski locker, ski locker painted, flotation foam installed, ski locker light in, and the bow floor piece layed out, and ducts for heater constructed and glassed. We were also able to sell the truck we fixed up privately rather then sending it to the auction so now the repairs in the boat are covered.

$60 dollar hatch off ebay (including shipping and all taxes)

On the to do in the short term is put final coat on ski locker, install rubber mat, cut hole for locker, run heater lines, screw and glue floor, glass then gel coat. Which brings me to my next question, whats the ratio of gel coat to harder, IPS in Kelowna is saying the following:

"The ratio for gelcoat is 2% MEKP catalyst. This is probably the midrange as most suppliers run between 1.75% and 2.25% depending on the temperature of the product"

so for 4 liters of gelcoat I would add 80 ml of harder?

Got a bit more done again. Heater hoses are run and just waiting to be connected when we do the floor tomorrow night.

So excited for tomorrow, boat will have its own floor since the start of the rebuild - I am beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel!

yep

unless you are shooting the entire boat in a gun bud....use smaller batches of gellcoat....it will go off faster than you can paint the stuff on.
im currently using 1/2 liter batches and its tough enough for me to paint fast enough.

Re: 1981 Campion Refurbishing

Thanks, opps, think we are doing ok - I am a lot more comfortable with the fiber glassing then when I first started.

Got the floor screwed and glued last night, tonight is bondo and fiber glassing

Another questions, some people talk of covering their gelcoat with plastic - is this required when I do the floor - I believe I bought gelcoat with wax in it - thus its a "finish" rather then a "structural" gelcoat?

Pictures to follow latter tonight.

Re: 1981 Campion Refurbishing

Long night but the floor is glassed in, went with 1708 cloth, but had a small piece of the 1.5 oz CSM near the back as I ran out of 1708, and 6oz cloth over top. I believe looks good as now, will check again in the morning - have the day off as its Canada Day.

Re: 1981 Campion Refurbishing

So today was very productive, got the floor and bilge gel coated, carb rebuilt (thanks to my Dad) valve cover gasket replaced - just need some contact cement to put the new gasket on for tomorrow

July1201010.jpg

Floor and bilge gel coated

July1201013.jpg

Carb - was clean but had a few issues, one was the heat riser tube that controls the choke being broken and a lack of spring issue on the accelerator pump(see below)

July1201014.jpg

To the left is the what that came off the carb, to the right is what is supposed to be in it, the accelerator pump controls the fuel supply during acceleration and probably explains why we had a bit of a hesitation when we took it out last year before the restore

This is the tie in plans we have for our heater (the round holes in the front of the boats are the ducts)

Re: 1981 Campion Refurbishing

Got the boat cleaned and waxed today, also my bro painted the transom, so now we are ready to drop the engine back in and then re attach the leg, not sure if we will get to it before we leave for a week to Vancouver Island but we hope to have this thing in the water by the end of July so have to see how it goes.

we changed to a "Meguiar's 67 marine-RV one step compound Aggressive cleaner plus polish" that worked great - finish exceeded what I thought a 30 year old gel coat paint job could look like.

try a abrasive cleaner/wax or wet sanding? I am not sure how my boat's finish will stand up either I suppose

Re: 1981 Campion Refurbishing

Used 3M restore, and then the Meguiars system. I think I might try magic eraser, it's like a 2500 grit....

And then tomorrow I'm going to delete these posts, as we're jacking your thread...
Or..not, as I can't figure out how.

Re: 1981 Campion Refurbishing

Engine and leg installed today - pretty much back at the point when we where "quickly going to repair the SMALL soft spot in the floor"

Leg Installed

So now the plan is:
-Get all the wiring hooked back up
-Install Carpet on the sides
-Get stereo hooked up
-Carpet engine cover, and all small items
-hook up heater
-carpet floor
-Install seats
-Take it out on the lake (hope for end of July)

The vinyl won't get done right away as we want to enjoy the boat for the summer - also waiting on some stainless steel fasteners from Fastenal. Original vinyl wasn't in to bad of shape we just want to change to match the interior colors we will have.

Re: 1981 Campion Refurbishing

Got a bit done on the boat again. We started to look into wiring as we blew a fuse we we hauled it home and found it in pretty rough shape so we ripped it all out and rewired in new LED lights. Also looked into the brakes, the master cylinder was empty and rusted, the sealing surfaces on the axles where gone and had already been ready sleeved once before so we order a new axle with electric brakes.

Hope to get the axle under it and electric brake wiring completed Tuesday night, and we are still waiting to get glue for our carpet. Also we have to finish up wiring the motor before start up.
