Gentlemen, I have a 1989 Johnson GT 200 that I need to remove from my bass boat in order to install a new steering cable. The reason for the removal is because it is set up on a manual jack plate and the angle is too much and would cause a kink in the cable if I tried to fish it through the current cut out with it connected to the outboard first. I really dont want to make the opening in the boat where the cable exits any larger if I can just lift the motor off the jack plate enough to get the cable through. I do have a nice fork lift that will easily take the load of the motor.
My question is, What is the best method (and location) for attaching chains or straps to the the entire outboard ?
One guy told me that there are three bolt holes in the top of the fly wheel that is threaded and a device can be attached at that location to hook a chain to. Im not crazy about the idea that the entire weight of the motor would be supported by the flywheel.
Any suggestions?

harmonic balancer puller, and Grade 8 Hardened bolts should hold it. or install a lifting eye.

So it is a common practice to lift the outboard via the flywheel?

make sure they thread all the way in also...and if you have a flywheel puller, get an eye bolt and a thick washer, works like a champ for me. I just got a lifting eye in, cause I had to pull a 150 merc...got to love that cool thingy
