I have the oppurtunity to purchase a 1981 Evinrude 9.9 outboard that, according to the owner, has not been used?? He claims that he inherited the motor from a relative and it is still in the original crating.

If he is indeed telling me the truth then what condition would you expect the internal seals to be in. Would they break down as quickly since they have not been previously exposed to fuel/oil,etc. How about the impellar?

What would be your main concern when checking it over?

Thanks for the help.

Re: Older Evinrude Question

plan on replacing all rubber. fuel hoses, spark plug wires, impeller. make sure it turns over, and has not frozen up. they were and are a good small motor, very much in demand. being new will not add much to the value, it is still a 1981 or the market for sale.

by the way 1981 is a teenager, not older.

i wouldn't say it doesn't add value. It's a "new" 1981 9.9. The <10hp motors are always in high demand, and one in mint condition really stands out, also, it might sell for more now, than it did new in 1981.

to a collector etc. but to a fisherman, it is a clean 1981 9.9.

Clean maybe. It is also an outboard that has gone 29 years with no maintenance. Not a plus in my book.

I would buy if price is not too much out of line and checks out. Just service the wear items as you normally would any outboard. If you want a new motor then I would pass.
