water pump impeller oversized?

i have a johnson 70hp, 1977.

70EL77S

i am replacing the water pump housing, impeller, the whole enchilada.

but i came across a huge issue. i am not to familiar with boats, everything i am doing is based on threads i have seen here and instructional videos.

the impeller does not fit the housing! is this normal? do i have to force the impeller in?

Looks good to me, that's how they come, the old one is toast btw. Put some soap on the impeller, turn the drive shaft clockwise with the impeller in place while you push downward on the housing and it will seat.
