I have a service manual but need some help on reassembling the lower unit.

I plan on installing a water pump kit as well.

I have a good handle on how this goes back together with the exception of the 20 individual rollers that fell out as I seperated the lower gearcase from the unit housing the WP.

Question: how are these rollers reinstalled?

Thanks

I guess you're talking about the lower pinion gear bearings? I usually just smear some bearing grease around the inside of the bearing hub and stick the needles back in, one by one. Then reinsert the pinion gear. Make sure you have them all back in.

Thanks.

Exactly how many needles are needed?

So, I put bearing grease along the back wall of the bearing, insert the needles and carefully guide the pinion gear in so that it presses and holds the needles in place. I also need to connect the shift rod to the lower gearcase as well.

Sounds like you need to have a steady hand.

Thanks

Not sure exactly how many needles, but they should fill the space without much spare room. If you put back all of them that you have and there is enough space for one more, then you lost one.:(

Found the remaining three in the lower gear unit. I flipped it upside down and shook them out.

When you reconnect the shift rod the lower rod is tapered just below the top. The bolt in the connecting clamp must pass through that tapered portion.
