aluminum deck refinishing

i am repainting deck,gunnels and splashwell on my 1976 crestliner nordic 17. never done this before and would like advice on entire operation, stripping, prepping and paint. any help would be greatly appreciated. bottom half of boat has already been done. can i lightly sandblast old finish off? thanks in advance.

Ayuh,... If the old finish isn't peeling off,... Leave it there...
Just sand it for adhesion,+ repaint it...
You'll save yourself a Ton of unnecessary work...

Not sand blast but media blast. Baking soda or crushed coconut shells are far less damaging.

If you blast (or sand) and get to bare aluminum..... you need to treat the bare spots with alodine, prime with a chromate primer and then paint.

What Bond-o suggested will save you time and money.

thanks for the help,one more question, there are quite a few spots that old paint has peeled from primer. should i remove all or can i peel loose stuff with a putty knife and sand edges to where paint is bonded well? thanks again

Ayuh,... If there's ANY paint left,... scuff it with 320grt. sanding it Smooth...
Then just Repaint...
