You would not gain power by switching carbs alone. you would however use more fuel, smoke more, and make it harder to start, if it would start at all. If you want 15hp, buy a 15hp motor.

Every application is different, and im not saying its not possible. It will require quite a bit of trial and error to make it run right. Through my own personal experience you can expect AT BEST to have a very tempramental little 9.5 that you wish you wouldnt have screwed with. :) If you have limited outboard knowledge it would be best to look for a bigger motor, IMO.

Indeed, they are great little motors. I was cringing at the thougt of you pulling the starter rope untill you collapsed :D I would find an old "project motor" to try such experiments on. It really sucks to miss some good fishing weather because you couldnt leave well enough alone. Believe me, Ive been there. :(

Aw c'mon guys, the 9.5 and 15 are as different as night and day. There is next to nothing interchangeable on them. Besides, the 9.5 has a downdraft carburetor and the 15 is a side draft. All this confusion probably relates to the 9.9hp, not 9.5. Again, totally different critters.

Night and day difference, a 9.5 and 9.9/15 carb and anything else for that matter are totally different.

I looked at the video you were describing. The motor in the video is a 9.9 and not 9.5hp motor. FR and BKtheking are correct. Those two motors are two very different motors. If you have 9.5hp, then enjoy it. When kept up and maintained they are solid little runners.

When the OMC designed the 15 they put a carb on it with a slightly smaller bore and that became the 9.9 hence you can easily convert the 9.9 to a 15. The 9.9 and 9.5 are different designs.

The differences between the 9.9 and 15HP versions of this outboard changed several times during the life of the design. I do think the carbs were always different, but some years there were other differences. The point is that changing the carb does not always produce the same engine as a 15HP.

From 1974-1978 the only difference between the 9.9 and 15 was the carburetor. After that, depending on the year, multiple differences came into play (reed shims, exhaust).
