hey guys i am prop shopping i am running a omc 14 1/4x23 on my party boat right now it was on my bay boat. so i need to prop down some right now with my normal load my rpms are at 4800. i talked with my local prop guy and he stated to go with a 17pitch. so i came and looked at all the aluminum props on here in the 17 pitch and wanted you guys opinions on which one to get. oh and the boat is a 24ft sundancer tritoon, 35 gallons of gas usually 6 - 10 adults, and my prop now is aluminum. i will post the link right here to all the 3 blade aluminums i am looking at can yall tell me which one would preform better. and i see there is a 15 1/2 amita prop should i consider getting a larger diameter due to i am cutting back n pitch. thanks

Re: prop shopping

Since you don't know the specific prop you need. The best way to do it is to buy from a local shop that will let you try a few out on the water first.

Expensive way to buy a prop if it's not the one you really wanted cause you pay shipping and handling both ways each time you try one out. And some places will even hit you with a restocking fee if you don't buy one from them.

Some online prop shops will let you buy and try. Maybe even iboats does this.

Either way, I think your best bet is getting a local shop that will let you try a few out. Make sure you have all your gear, coolers, batteries etc and the average amount of passengers on board when you test drive the props out.

Yeah, and then some. You'll be up around 6500RPM with a 17p prop.

What is the recommended RPM range for that motor?

Re: prop shopping

i wont be a 6500 wot, i am only getting 4700-4800 wot right now with my 21 my operation range is 5000-5500 so doing the math of 200rpm per pitch i should be at a 17 maybe an 18 with the heavy loads i carry on my boat, and that should put me at 5500-5600 if you did not read the boat is a pontoon not a glass haul. and i am scared if i run the 19 i still wont get the mid range power i need when i have a full load. i am not really worried about the top speed.

sorry guys i read my original post and i put that i was running a 14x23 that is wrong i am running a 14x21 right now and only getting 4800.

and i would feel different if the 4800 rpm was just sometimes when i am at full load. but i am only getting 4800 with my everyday load on the boat and with just me and an empty tank of gas i can get 5000.

so do i chance it and get a 19 prop and see where i am at or to i go to a 17. and according to sundancer dealer they recommend a 17-18 on my boat with a 175. and the local prop place recommended a 17

Shae, the 17" pitch Amita 4 blade will be perfect for your setup.

In your first post you said you had a 23p prop:

Also the 200 RPM per inch of pitch idea is not very accurate.

Re: prop shopping

I agree the 4blade prop hwsiii recommends is ideal. It was the 23p that threw me off originally.

Hey no worries. I think that 14.25 is the only diameter available for that prop.

Good luck with it and post back with your results. I've got a 4-blade solas coming for me in the mail right now actually.

Cheers

Re: prop shopping

good deal thanks for the help man... also it looks like the amita does not require a special hub kit correct.

Re: prop shopping

Shae, with a 3 blade prop that means your 175 HP motor is delivering almost 60 HP to eah blade and with the 4 blade that makes it only 45 HP for eah blade and you have more surfae area to keep your prop slip down, and the Solas Amita will also lift more of the rear of the tritoon out of the water as well.

Re: prop shopping

so by lifting more of the back end up i should get on the pad better when i am light load.... cause the rear seems to run good right now. i have never been on a 4 blade prop to see the diff. of them thats why i ask.

That is just my opinion Shae, you might want to wait and get some more peoples thoughts.

Re: prop shopping

I understand, the reason I believe the Solas Amita is right is because that is a large boat and the 4 blades will help you pull a skier and tubes up quickly as well as let you plane at very slow speeds, hope that helps .
